“In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I’ve often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net. Now I’m letting my guard down.” —Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the introduction of What Happened

For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet.

In these pages, she describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. With humor and candor, she tells readers what it took to get back on her feet—the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through, and what the experience has taught her about life. She speaks about the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics.

She lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome, and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future.

The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign and its aftermath—both a deeply intimate account and a cautionary tale for the nation.

  • Hillary Clinton Lost and is in Denial

The title of this comment the summary of this book. The book itself is poorly written, it is a compilation of the most uninteresting, politically correct cliches. It isn't original, genuine, or philosophically relevant. Most of the content discussed has been said before. There is blatantly poor use of philosophy as well. I can only imagine the people who praise this book as dim witted conformists. As for the politics, the book chooses to adhere to ignorance and ignore a lot of the reasons why people did not support Hillary Clinton; which includes her role and advocation for war in the Middle East including Iraq and Libya, her continued support to fight in the Middle East again in Syria and Iran, her advocation to remove amendment rights such as privacy and bearing arms, and of course her husband who ironically is the real sexual predator--in contrast to trump.
  • Great book and insight...what could have been

First the people that are criticizing this book have not read it. Really? Someone with your attitude giving Hilary money, you truly expect us to believe that? Hillary takes full responsibility for losing, more than she deserves. Who could have expected the Russians to have so much of an influence and people to not sift out up the truth ? The book also provides insightful and provocative thoughts about going forward. Great book. Loved it

  • Donald trump for president 2020

    By jb is horrible
She should be in jail, everyone who voted for this sad disgrace of a human being are honestly dumb, she would've done nothing but put this country in more debt, everyone who voted for her really need to open their eyes. Trump isn't racist you just choose to believe the media, again Hillary supporters are blind. Don't buy this terrible book it's full of lies just like her. Waste of money.

Secretary Clinton sets the record straight. A book, like the author will be a historical reference for years to come. A true heroine for Americans today and those to come.
  • Sad and pathetic

    By Joeytf4
All this book is is a further continuation of a woman that refuses to take responsibility for her own actions. This book is nothing but Hillary Clinton blaming everyone else for her loss. She even blames Bernie Sanders for daring to run against her. This is just the whining of a woman who felt entitled to be president and throws A tantrum when she does not get what she wants in the end. This woman has constantly claimed to be a role model for women everywhere and all she has done since the election is tell women that when you don't get what you want in things do not go your way that it is not your fault but it's everyone else's and you shouldn't blame them and never take responsibility for your own actions. This woman is absolutely pathetic and needs to just stop it and grow up. America made its decision and it was not her.

Who knew she was funny, and human, and so much more analytical that we even thought. Hillary would have been the experienced President for today's world-not the "Hey, let's try this and see what happens" one we have now. Timing is everything they say. This book was captivating, informative, and a genuine look behind the scenes. She is human, people! And despite reports to the contrary, she DOES take responsibility for this loss, however also takes an extremely close look at other factors influencing the outcome of the election. No matter what party you belong to, read this book and learn from it. Just sit down with an open mind and THEN, judge.
