Ever read a book that just stayed with you over the years? This was a reading assignment in Mrs. O'Conner's 10th Grade English class, in 1971, at Kubasaki High School, Okinawa. I was educated in Department of Defense (DoD) schools. There was no segregation, so his story was totally foreign to me. It stayed with me over the years. I didn't recall the details, but I knew it was meaningful in my life. So, I bought it on e-books, to re-read, and I am glad I did. It is as pertinent today as it was in 1959. While there have been many changes in our society, racism has never left us. Sadly, it all sounds too familiar.

Regardless of what race you are, read this novel. If you aren't black, it is critical to read this book to understand the mindset of what it is like to be black within American society. The struggles we've overcome, and how they continue to affect our livelihood to this day. Please read this book as an American, and allow it to help you respect those that are also American, but have some differences. Beautifully written considering the devastating content.

My 9 th grade teacher tossed aside our American History book early in the year and had us read this. He grew up in the Deep South during this period and a large part of our semester was devoted to learning what this experience was all about. I was excited to find the updates in this book. The book itself was one I search for every time I get an ereader, Blab Like Me should be read by every person to remember what life was like.

I'm currently reading this book. I'm a freshman going into high school. This book was a choice I have to read during the summer. So far it's great.

As a freshman going into high school, this is one of the books my school suggested I read over the summer. I am so glad they suggested this book. I loved it! I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Black Like Me really delves into the prejudices of white America during the 1960s. Personally, Black Like Me has given me a deeper understanding of both racism and that time period. Not only is Black Like Me a great historical work, but it's also extremely intriguing. The work really opened up my eyes and made me see and understand. That Black Like Me is in fact not a work of fiction but a work of nonfiction makes the read even more chilling. The fact that the events described in the story are true just fascinates me. I admire John Howard Griffin for going on this dangerous expedition and relating his thoughts and ideas so well. I loved Black Like Me!

Worth every penny spent! This is a great read that will leave you feeling satisfied.
