Description
The #1 New York Times bestseller that charts America’s dangerous drift into a state of perpetual war.
Written with bracing wit and intelligence, Rachel Maddow's Drift argues that we've drifted away from America's original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war. To understand how we've arrived at such a dangerous place, Maddow takes us from the Vietnam War to today's war in Afghanistan, along the way exploring Reagan's radical presidency, the disturbing rise of executive authority, the gradual outsourcing of our war-making capabilities to private companies, the plummeting percentage of American families whose children fight our constant wars for us, and even the changing fortunes of G.I. Joe. Ultimately, she shows us just how much we stand to lose by allowing the scope of American military power to overpower our political discourse.
Sensible yet provocative, dead serious yet seriously funny, Drift reinvigorates a "loud and jangly" political debate about our vast and confounding national security state.
Reviews
Thorough investigation
5By BrettifulShe dug deeply to investigate and reveal a dangerous situation that imperils our country, what is left of our democracy, and our world. But she doesn't just tell the bad news; she tells us a way out. A fantastic book, written like she's talking to you, totally readable and interesting.Disappointing

1By DrHartwellI am glad Rachel Maddow has no influence on Foreign Policy and National Security. Too bad MSNBC provides her a platform to spew her venom. This book fails to accept the reality of the dangerous world in which we live.Drift
5By Dante7Searing indictment of how we have gone off the rails militarily. Patriotic at its core, funny on the surface, scary at its core. A must read. A very important concise study and solutions filled book.Rachel Maddow is no Barbara Tuchman!
1By LotRsFanHer book makes virtually NO mention of the United States' involvement in World War One under Woodrow Wilson, which is actually THE defining event of our extensive intervention in military matters beyond our borders. Maddow's book is lazy, snarky, amateurish and irrelevant. (Yes, I have read it - to the degree I could suffer it.)Just finished...My thoughts
5By CifierRachel Maddow, ever thoughtful, delivers a very cogent and insightful perspective on the drift of America's policy on warfare, and the processes that are engaged in coming to that dreadful conclusion.Drift

1By harrywagnerI like RM, and I like the book.it would be nice to read it. Unfortunately I bought my copy from iTunes. I won't make that mistake again. The book is missing several pages and is a complete mess. I'll buy the book somewhere else. I will NOT be buying any further books from iTunes.Awesome Read
5By Raul_323This book is informative. I never knew how much the war policies changed since ww2.Interesting & Informative
5By QuidzarkWell written, well researched & well reasoned account of how this once great nation failed to heed Eisenhower's warning and allowed the Military-Industrial Complex to bankrupt us both financally & morally.Careful unbiased assessment
5By THEmatrix523Coming from an enlisted military perspective having been serving for the last 10 years and through 2 yearlong deployments to Iraq, I felt Ms. Maddow gave an honest and unbiased assessment of our country's growing military/civilian divide. A good read.Insightful
5By JDale1An absolute must read! Rachel may not be the nations best writer however she may be the nations best thinker. Rachel is destined to be one of the best political intellectuals of all times. Charlie Rose place her on your interview list pronto! Dale SimmonsTime To Return to Democracy
5By Tee SquaredWhat a brilliantly researched book about the evolution of the interface of our government and our military. I can't help but worry what our country will become if we continue to "Drift" on our current path. Kudos to Rachel Maddow!Fair and balanced...
5By GdCA...it really is. Unlike, well...you know. A scholarly, rational, thoroughly readable and relentlessly entertaining book. Her conversational style draws you in and holds your attention. Agree or disagree, this book should be required reading for everyone in government. It will provoke discussion.Awesome!!
5By KWDicksonExcellently written! It's a must-read.Nothing wrong with it
3By JbstevenI'm a big fan of the authors commentary and opinions. In large part because she thoroughly researches her information, is well versed on the topics and infuses just the right amount of humor to compliment her superior intellectualism. This volume is certainly no different, however, I found most of the content a bit dry and actually over analyzed. Although there are fascinating sections such as the defense budget numbers, nuclear industry status, and executive branch overreach these are brief. I feel the book lacked a certain cohesiveness and compelling appeal. Worth the read, but hard pressed to recommend it.Great Read
5By Dan_ClementsThis should be required reading for everyone. Really an outstanding book based on facts, not invented rhetoric.America aDrift!
5By Enigma1974Thank you Ms. Maddow for your research. Unfortunately, the people who need to read this book will not read it. The idiots in the South are too busy bashing your personal life, rather than focusing on what the corporate warlords are doing to them and their livelihood. The fact that all media is owned by just 6 companies in this country is the number 1 reason why we have reached a pathetic state. I'm afraid it's too late to convince the stupid.Easy politics
5By Lotta GasRachel makes politics interesting by using humor and frankness. I hope she is writing another book. Love her style !
