5By GreenrodeoMagnificent read. Especially for those who have the ability to appreciate history and it’s greatest characters without political correctness revisionism. The book presents Lee in a way that allows us to see “the marble man” as he really was. A man torn between doing what he believed was right and the love for family, his country and his state. The author skillfully shows that Lee was a figure who had his own flaws as well the flaws of the culture in which he was raised but within the time period in which he lived his astounding leadership, his gentle demeanor and his aggressive military capabilities made him a hero in the South and a feared and hugely respected figure in the North. Many facts are revealed in this book that will surprise readers, including Lee’s engineering accomplishments impacting civilian life before and after the Civil War as well as the fact that Lincoln offered him the command of the Union armies at the outbreak of the war. In addition that he served as The Superintendent of West Point before the war, lost all his wealth and his home (The Custis Mansion, now part of Arlington Cemetery) during the war.Clouds of Glory
