Description

When you finish the Survivalist, check out my new series, "The Watchman."

Frontier Justice is the first book in the post-apocalypse Survivalist series by Dr. Arthur Bradley and features 15 full-page illustrations. The Superpox-99 virus has wiped out nearly the entire human race. Governments have collapsed. Cities have become graveyards filled with unspeakable horror. People have resorted to scavenging from the dead, or taking from the living. The entire industrialized world has become a wasteland of abandoned cars, decaying bodies, and feral animals.

To stay alive, U.S. Deputy Marshal Mason Raines must forage for food, water, and gasoline while outgunning those seeking to take advantage of the apocalyptic anarchy. Together with his giant Irish wolfhound, Bowie, he aligns with survivors of the town of Boone in a life and death struggle against a gang of violent criminals. With each deadly encounter, Mason is forced to accept his place as one of the nation's few remaining lawmen.

Halfway across the country, a killer is released from prison. With hopes set on a fresh start, he rescues a young girl desperate to get home. As they travel across the wasteland that once was the United States, they must call upon every bit of strength and courage to survive not only the horrors of the new world but also a violent government agenda.

Killing defined in detail, but of course it’s all okay - the hero decides who lives and dies. This book embodies what I would imagine ex-President Duterte of The Philippines told himself to justify allowing citizens to kill people whom they “suspected” of dealing drugs. “Drawing down on the two men seemed justifiable in this new world where every man had to be accountable for his actions.” Misogyny: “Please don’t feel tHe need to do anything so womanishly stupid in the future.” The hero’s comment to his lover when she tries to help him. The President of the USA is a woman in the book - and of course she is portrayed as weak. The most trite similes and metaphors I have ever read: “the bodies lay limp in the car like overcooked noodles . . . He could become as violent and unpredictable as a loan shark collecting unpaid bets. . . They walked toward him slow and easy, like matadors approaching toro bravo.” UGH - what a waste of valuable time.

This is an enjoyable quick read. My only wish is that the President and Vice President would have been switched. Otherwise, I’m invested in the protagonists and look forward to reading more.
  • Great light reading?

Another clone of the western male power fantasy (please don’t misunderstand, I don’t think it’s a ‘’man thing” I think it’s an “author hasn’t had live interaction in a while” thing.) Flat characters, vaguely -ist stereotypes of various kinds, violence with no point other than to make the main character look handsome or whatever. Uninspired villains, microwave leftovers cataclysm, utterly ridiculous “romance”, but not as bad as some things I’ve read. I know. I’m mean. I just feel like; the author obviously has an excellent command of the English language, he could have put more soul into it. But we all have to make a living I guess.
