Candace Wheeler was regarded as the mother of interior design. She was one of the first American female textile and interior decorators. She is well-known for helping to open a file of interior design for women, encouraging new style of American design and making the decorative art affordable. After the Civil War, she advocated the fields of fine arts, applied arts and design suitable for women who needed to support their families. She was the key person in the development of art courses for women in many cities across America.
