5By CrittersmithI enjoyed reading this part romance, part “sting” involving the venerable Lord Richard Vane and his sharp-witted Valet David “Foxy” Cyprian. This is the third installment in the Society of Gentlemen world, full of well-defined, flawed characters and an intricate, intriguing storyline. I was also intrigued by the premise of shifting “power”, the wooing of David, and the transformation of Lord Richard’s beliefs. I love this series. I will miss reading about this world. I guess I will have to re-read it again and again.Provocative and gripping read!!!
5By jbebout1295This is only my second K.J. Charles book, but it certainly won't be my last. I can't say enough about how impressed I am with her writing, and with this series in particular. She really has beautifully captured the political climate and class system of the day and the impact they have on the masses. Richard and David come from different classes and have very real issues to overcome as a result. The journey that these two characters take throughout this book is truly a beautiful thing to witness. It is poignant and romantic and gut-wrenching and sexy and impassioned and meaningful and absolutely riveting. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a provocative and gripping read. * I was given an advanced copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.a story of forbidden love
3By Valkia12This is more of 3 1/2 stars for me. This story is about a nobleman and his valet, their forbidden love for each other, and their journey to overcome obstacles to truly love one another. Lord Richard is well respected and very upstanding. He battles with his feelings for his valet, David, feeling that they can never come to fruition. Lines get crossed, feelings get hurt, and they struggle to be together. I enjoyed David's willpower to stick to his guns and wanted to smack Lord Richard up side his head. The friendships among their acquaintances added a wonderful touch.Wonderful, thought-provoking, satisfying conclusion to a fabulous series
5By CG-54I won a copy of this book (as a download from NetGalley) from an online contest. This was a huge bonus for me because I got to read the book early! I love this series (I love anything by this author, basically). I read this the day I downloaded it, then went back to read the whole series again and read it a second time. One of the things I love about KJ Charles's writing is that she doesn't play to expectations. This series is set in the Regency, and while most Regency romances (while admittedly are generally M/F, not M/M) are focused more on the manners and drawing room intrigue, Ms. Charles isn't afraid to venture into some pretty serious political situations--which adds a degree of tension you don't usually find in Regency romances. Likewise, her heroes don't have to be perfect to be imminently compelling. Apparently some readers think Lord Richard (one of the heroes in this book) is a jerk (if you've read A Seditious Affair, you'll know why!), but that's judging him by modern standards and information. Ms. Charles poses some really thought-provoking questions through the characters' attitudes -- what would you think about a D/s relationship if you had no name to give to that kind of power exchange? How would you view a person with dyslexia if you had no idea what it was? Lord Richard and Cyprian have to find their own way in a world in which the social classes rarely intermingled. I loved the way Ms. Charles handled this--and if Lord Richard had to bend a little more than Cyprian? Serves him right for being a jerk. :-)Richard finally gets his story & it's wonderful.
5By ButtonsMom2003This is the third book in the Society of Gentlemen series and I loved it. This can be read as a standalone but I think you will enjoy it a lot more if you read the other two books first. I read books one and two out of order and it didn’t matter but this one is about the leader of the group of men called the Ricardians. There is so much information in the first two books that will make this one more meaningful if you read at least one of them first. (I’d suggest book two if you can only read one of them.) Lord Richard Vane is a member of the aristocracy – there is no way he can associate with a servant – but he wants his valet, David Cyprian, in the worst way. He’s managed to control his desires for years but when fate brings them closer together he finds he can’t resist David – especially when he finds out that David wants him just as much. This book revisits characters from the previous two books and we find the Ricardians in danger of being revealed as sodomites – an accusation that if proved to be true could cost them more than just their place in society. Once again, David Cyprian’s unique talents are called upon to help the Ricardians. The suspense in this story was delicious; I was glued to my ereader from start to finish. I don’t have to words to do this book justice. K. J. Charles writing carries me away to another place where I’m totally immersed in the story she is telling. My heart hurts for Richard and David and I want so badly for them to get their HEA. This story had my emotions all over the place – the best kind of romance there is, in my opinion. Love is love, it doesn’t matter if it’s M/M, M/F or F/F, and KJC has once again written a captivating story. All of the books in The Society of Gentlemen series were so good; I’m truly sorry to see it come to an end.
