Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • ONE OF TIME’S TEN MOST IMPORTANT NONFICTION BOOKS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

The “extraordinary” (The New York Times) autobiography of the legendary civil rights leader once called the most dangerous man in America—essential reading for anyone who wants to understand this nation’s history

In the searing pages of this classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and anti-integrationist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Black Muslim movement to veteran writer and journalist Alex Haley. In a unique collaboration, Haley worked with Malcolm X for nearly two years, interviewing, listening to, and understanding the most controversial leader of his time.

Raised in Lansing, Michigan, Malcolm Little journeyed on a road to fame as astonishing as it was unpredictable. Drifting from childhood poverty to petty crime, Malcolm found himself in jail. It was there that he came into contact with the teachings of the little-known Black Muslim leader Elijah Muhammad. The newly renamed Malcolm X devoted himself body and soul to the world of Islam, becoming the Nation’s foremost spokesman. When his conscience forced him to break with Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity to spread an inspiring message of pride, power, and self-determination across the country.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X stands as the definitive statement of a movement and a man whose work was never completed but whose message is timeless. Malcolm’s fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American Dream, and the inherent racism in a society that denies its nonwhite citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Haley did a good job of painting the true identity of Malcom X. He was a broken boy, who carried all those unresolved issues into adulthood and became a Muslim Extremist in the process.

This book has open me to how I think about the world since Malcolm death. Some 60 years later things haven’t changed much. The thing I love most is despite his deep convictions he was still able to change and because of those changes the world became better. His life is also a cautious tale of how you should only follow god and not man. Malcolm and his family deserve better! I wished I had read this book when I was younger. I recommend all people of all races and ages read this book!

For me, this a real love/hate story about the life of Malcolm X. I love that despite him only being 39 at death he had really lived forever. The hate about is I always think of how life would have been if his life wasn’t taken. Truth be told I believe the Nation of Islam & several Christian denominations planned against this man. Crazy how people will grow to dislike a person once they feel that demanding aurora. And much like a lot of stories in this thing called life: it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

Not sure where to begin, but I’ll say that it’s a must read. I initially downloaded the book and begin reading it and then I bought the hard copy to annotate more in it. This literary piece is full of insight of America and the modern world as we know through the lens of someone who came from the bottom to awaken by the very power of Allah to metamorph into a prominent Historical figure of the 20th Century. His awakening is one relative to the Black men of today whom life’s value to yield jewels some 60 years later. I love seeing the Malcolm before and after transformation from the bottom to becoming his highest self able to be pure and selfless which are attributes missing from the modern people these days. RISE IN PEACE EL HAJJ MALIK AL SHABAZZ

This was one of the most engaging books that I have read in a long while. The book brings profound perspective of the Black American community that one can learn from and it is a great story of how deep conviction can reverberate and transform others.

Very few books can have you go on an emotional journey of a man who has been deceased for almost 60 years and still feel as though he is still with us today. A man who had went through a metamorphosis in a time where black men were not allowed to mature and evolve let alone were viewed as human beings. Malcolm defied the propaganda of black men with his high level of intelligence and discipline. Malcolm your journey was short and had its ups and downs but it was a beautiful journey nonetheless! Thank you Malcolm! We as a people are proud of you around the world. You have touched many lives including myself. You have taught me that life is about taking risk and that change is incumbent as a human if one wants to esteem to reach the highest point of human achievement: Spiritual Victory! Once again thank you El-Hajj-Malik-El-Shabazz

This book shows the struggle of a black man beaten down by his own society over and over again. A book like this should be mandatory in all schools.

One of the most important reads for any revolutionary student of the struggle against white supremacy and also those who simply love history and would like to understand the Man. Please don’t stop reading until you finish. You must see his before and his after. BOTH absolutely necessary and should be considered mandatory understanding for the American peoples psyche. Malcolms depth, tenderness, intensity, darkness, light and ferocious love for his people is revealed in this book and it is a MUST read for every man woman and child.

El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) is very misunderstood, but this book sheds light on everything that he has done for black people and Muslims. His journey from a hustler and a robber that went to prison, to a racist Nation of Islam Minister (the racism was wrong, but it made sense why he believed in it), to an amazing Sunni Muslim that was no longer racist, shows that everyone deserves a second chance. We will never forget what El-Hajj has done for black people around America and the world.
