Reviews
Young aduls are more tempted.
5By Sherka47The advice in this book will intrinsically make sense to parents. Ms. Lythcott-Haims is the perfect person to write on this topic. Her background as a former dean of students and as a parent in Palo Alto lends expertise and weight to her conclusions, and she presents her information in a logical, informative way. This book will, hopefully, open up dialogue among parents and school administrators alike. Lythcott-Haims presents a convincing argument that having a less stressful, less directed childhood will behoove parents and children alike and will result in young adults who are independent and ready to take on today's complex world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has or works with children/young adultsFormer Teacher!
5By Silentdarkness19As a former teacher and a resident in one of the most competitive school districts in the country, I've seen first-hand the damage that overparenting and "helicopter parenting" can do, and Julie Lythcott-Haims' book provides a compelling, workable, un-preachy, and thoughtful approach to how to avoid this. In the crazy, pressure-cooker mix of raising kids, it's also incredibly comforting to have an alternative voice in the mix, one that is, at the same time, both pro-parent and pro-kid. I'm recommending it to my parent and teacher friends, as I think it's applicable to both.I like it.
5By Johnnyboy2032In the last two-thirds of the book, the author discusses steps that parents can take to raise a child who should have no difficulty mastering adulthood when the time comes. This is the “how-to” sections of the book. The course that is outlined is brave, reasonable, and creative; however, parenting outside the cultural norm will always be an enormous struggle.I love this book!
5By John478This book teaches a lot about the fundamentals of teaching your children to be respectful, and having feelings about others in life, and not just about themselves.
