Description

Traffic in downtown Los Angeles turns hellish when a woman hurtles from an overpass and crashes through the windshield of a car on the 110 Freeway. Narrowly escaping death in the epic pile up, Detective Finn O’Brien and his partner, Cori Anderson, throw themselves into the fray: Cori to triage and Finn rushing toward the flaming car in a desperate bid to save the woman. But survival is not an option. As the car explodes in a fireball, she dies in his arms. When her autopsy reveals a gruesome secret, Finn is determined to prove her death was no accident. Together with Cori, he follows a twisted trail that leads into the veiled and exotic world of L.A.'s exiled African community, the luxurious enclaves of Hollywood and finally to the doorstep of a third world despot whose cruelty knows no bounds and whose influence has a stranglehold on the City of the Angels.

Great plot, multiple characters but easy to keep them straight. Nice twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and look forward to my next book in her series.

Loved your book. Hopefully Finn and Cori get together in future books.

As I continue to read this series, I’m pleased to see that the main characters lives evolve rather than wallow in their pasts. Also appealing is the author’s understanding that no one makes it happily through life without significant others who in their unique ways help define the main characters even more completely.

This second in the series continues to reveal the compassionate man dealing with a tragic past. These mysteries wrapped in police procedural are softened by insight and humor.

I rarely (4 books in 40 years) don't finish a book. I barely made it thru chapter 8'and gave up. All her characters were shallow and seemed to not have any relation in any way to the other characters. In fact, by end of chapter 8 there was a cop with "big blonde teased hair and huge boobs" and a partner who barely spoke. Just not her writing at all. Though if it is from now on, I'll be crossing this author off my list.

Compared to her other writings, the characters in this series are shallow in the sense they seem more of a bit character than the main characters. Not all the subplots have an ending so they hang out there. A paragraph or two to close out each of the background plots (Congresswomen, Developer, etc.) would help.
