Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The acclaimed author of A Higher Call and Devotion presents the “engrossing” (CNN) true story of an American tank gunner’s journey into the heart of the Third Reich during World War II, where he will meet destiny in an iconic armor duel—and forge an enduring bond with his enemy.

“A band of brothers in an American tank . . . Makos drops the reader back into the Pershing’s turret and dials up a battle scene to rival the peak moments of Fury.”—The Wall Street Journal

When Clarence Smoyer is assigned to the gunner’s seat of his Sherman tank, he discovers a hidden talent: He’s a natural-born shooter. At first, Clarence and his fellow crews in the legendary 3rd Armored Division—“Spearhead”—thought their tanks were invincible. Then they met the murderous German Panther and a pattern soon emerged: The lead tank always gets hit.

After Clarence sees his friends cut down at the West Wall and in the Battle of the Bulge, he and his crew are given a weapon with the power to avenge their fellow comrades—the Pershing, a state-of-the-art “super tank.” But with it comes a harrowing new responsibility: Now they will spearhead every attack.

That’s how Clarence finds himself leading the U.S. Army into its largest urban battle of the European war, the fight for Cologne, the “Fortress City” of Germany. Clarence will engage the fearsome Panther in a duel immortalized by an army cameraman. And he will square off with Gustav Schaefer, a teenager behind the trigger in a Panzer IV tank, whose crew has been sent on a suicide mission to stop the Americans.

What happens next will haunt Clarence to the modern day, drawing him back to Cologne to do the unthinkable: to face his enemy, one last time.

It’s been a long time since I have enjoyed a book this much- maybe never. And I read a lot of books! Unlike some true accounts of WW2, this powerful piece never slows down with names of every soldier or officer in the armed forces. What a drag that can be. However, in this account only the main characters are discussed and made very personal to the reader. And the descriptions of the tank battles and lives of the tankers is spellbinding. This author doesn’t skip a beat. I found that I literally knew nothing about what these men went through , be it the heat of battle, the horror involved in same, or the very personal emotions they experienced. The author tells the story from both sides, allied and German. The epilogue is terrific as well. Final word- Get it, Read it!

My father was a history teacher and I spent much of my youth reading about WWII. My life’s path did not include serving, I can only attempt to get my mind wrapped around what what it must have been like. I’ve read many many books, by many authors, Adam Makos has a gift. I read “A Higher Call” and “Spearhead” back to back over a weekend. The author has a rare gift of combining the sweep of history with the very personal stories of brave men and women on both sides of the conflict. Deeply moving stories, immersive writing, simply brilliant.

One of the best accounts of World War II, through the eyes of a Tank Gunner. Unbelievable action packed drama from Normandy to the very end of the war. A permanent part of my library! Daniel Pero

When you think that everything about WWII has been written a book like this with a whole different take pops up. Well written and does an outstanding job of explaining what these, and all combat veterans carry for the rest of there lives. If you think war is glorious, this will change your heart.

A real page turner. Learned a lot about tank warfare in WWII. And it’s not about the generals, but about the enlisted men doing the dirty work. Loved the book!

This was factual and engaging telling of the men who fought with the 3d Armor Division “Spearhead”. Excellent research resulted in this book accuracies which only enhances the story of the tankers and infantryment that fought from Normandy thru Cologne onto victory in WWII. We has a nation need to grateful to these living and past warriors who served us so well. Well done Adam Makos
