Description

No one explodes one of the longest-held misconceptions of music history better than Steve Lukather and his band Toto. The dominant sound of the late ‘70s and ‘80s was not punk, but a slick, polished amalgam of rock and R&B first staked out on Boz Scaggs’ Silk Degrees. That album was shaped in large part by the founding members of Toto, who were emerging as the most in-demand elite session crew in LA, and further developed on the band’s self-titled multi-platinum debut. A string of massive hits followed for Toto while Lukather and bandmates David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, and Steve Porcaro also served as creative linchpins on some of the most successful and influential records of the era, including Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
In this incisive memoir, Lukather tells the complete Toto story. He also lifts the lid on what went on behind the closed studio doors, shedding light on the unique creative processes of some of the most legendary names in music: from Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, and Elton John to Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Roger Waters, and Aretha Franklin. Lukather’s extraordinary tale also encompasses the dark side of stardom and the American Dream. Frank, engaging, and often hilarious, The Gospel According to Luke is no ordinary rock memoir. It is the real thing.

This book, audible version, is by far the BEST ever! You’ll laugh a lot and at times, feel sad for things that Luke has endured but, by the end, if you’re not a huge fan, you’re not human.

I too burned through this great book in about 3 days. I could not put it down! Luke is one of my favorite guitarist/songwriters of all time, but I was blown away by all the things he’s played on that I never knew about. I’d put him up there with the greatest musicians to ever pick up a guitar, and this reads like a one in a million fairytale life. Only it really happened. Fan for life, bless you Steve!
  • Great book for any musician but perfect for guitar players

I have always loved STEVE (Luke) as a musician and reading this book about his life made me love the guy even more. The book not only told you about his life but his humility, his amazing session work, his ups and downs in his life, his family (including his Toto family as well). This book keeps your interest through out.... never a dull moment. Love the discography at the end of the book as well. Must buy for anyone. I am hoping he does do another book with the session years. That would be interesting too. Keep it coming Luke, I will be one of the first to read it. Now I have to say he’s one of my favorite authors now too!

Good read! I’ve been a toto fan for years and one of the main reasons is Steve. Although he is credited by his peers and fans for his guitar work, I think he is humble when it comes to taking lead vocals. He has a great ear and his voice is phenomenal! I love to hear it! His best solo work is Luke- thoroughly solid with “The real truth”, “Love The Things You”, and “Tears Of My Own Shame”. This great read has led me to jam to his recommendations of Supersonic Blues Machine and Lance Lopez. Thanks for music!
  • Steve Lukather is an amazing guy.

I started reading this book on a Friday night, and finished it by Sunday morning. I literally could not put it down. I'm a huge Toto/Steve fan, and he took me on a amazing ride with this book. He is so open and honest. There are times when you will laugh reading this, and times when you will tear up. You realize that he loves what he does. A rare and amazing story!

I’ve been waiting for this book to come our for months, and I wasn’t disappointed. I’m really glad it wasn’t some kind of ‘tell all’, I appreciate reading the stories behind the music.

Steve Lukather is an elite in an era of extraordinary creativity - Toto was the Wrecking Crew and The Section of its time, playing on EVERYONE’s albums as well as beig highly successful themselves. What this book doesn’t say enough about is the hours of practice that it takes and the importance of his raw talent. He does talk about combining those with extraordinary dedication, importance of musical theory and the still need for just plain luck - talk about someone who had the goods and was in the right place at the right time. And he ran with it. Read this book, listen to the artists and songs as you do - will give you a true history lesson in popular music through one of its most important eras.
