Description

Sometimes the only place left to go is home.

Kara Martinson always thought her high school crush was out of her league, but they did share one night she’s never been able to forget. Nearly three decades after being disowned by her parents and forced to raise her son on her own, Kara’s made it—her art is being toasted at a gallery opening. Even better, she and her son are finally on stable ground. Until Mr. One-Night Stand himself crashes her party.

Harry Canton always knew Kara would make it as an artist. Almost thirty years after high school, he still considers her the one that got away. But the surprise reunion doesn’t quite go to plan when Harry discovers he left her with more than just memories when he went away to college. Desperate to connect with the family he never knew existed, Harry convinces his son to move cross country for a fresh start with his father—and pleads with Kara to come home, too.

Kara hasn’t stepped foot in their hometown since the day she was sent away. But her son desperately wants the father he never had and denying him that may cost her everything. Can love heal old heartaches so Harry and Kara can have a second chance at the future they were robbed of so long ago? Or will the pain of the past be too much to face?

This was an emotional heart tugging read, the author gets the relationships between the characters so much depth as they work together to resolve deep aching wounds that surround their lives. The portrayal of their emotional turmoils was so raw and captivating in how it was explained it was easy to understand how the characters felt the way they did. This book focuses on healing and forgiveness and how it’s never too late to make right past transgressions, it’s also very accepting of different life views which was appreciated. I like the switching character perspectives, it made the book so much sweeter and easier to understand the main characters, the choices they made and their secret hidden desires. Kara is the main female lead who is such a strong independent selfless character but also very stubborn, she doesn’t do confrontation and has spent her whole life running from her past. I enjoyed reading how much she grew and the courage it must of taken for her to finally confront her demons and the anger that has been her constant companion. Harrison is the male lead and personality wise the complete opposite of Kara, he’s more reserved and goes through life timidity where his counterpart brings out the life in him that he’s desperate to bask in. Harry is a responsible, loving and supportive character with this determination to never let slip past him without his consent ever again the one thing that’s always matter to him now that he’s been made aware of it, his family. The suspenseful romance slowly builds as past resentments are resolved and trust and hope brings forth a possibility for something epic, there is some graphic scenes towards the end but were tastefully done. The supporting character were infuriating, mistakes were made, assumptions were had but each supportive character grew as much as the mains as they confronted themselves with the consequences that shaped so many lives.

I made it halfway through and gave up. Lots of boring exposition, saying the same things over and over. Characters are flat and colorless. Don’t waste your time thinking it is going to get better.
  • Happily ever after tale with some distress

HEA stories are not my favorite but this one sucked me in by being about a young woman ejected from her home and family by an unexpected pregnancy bu being given succor in a modified commune in Oregon. Is gets complicated from there but is entertaining with it.

The first half of the book was good. But towards the end Kara became this “why me boo,hoo why me “ weak woman . Pull up your big girl pants and get over it. It’s not all about you you have a kid, think of him. Like I said it was a ok book

What a super pack of emotions in this book. I don’t think there was one human emotion that wasn’t felt and dealt with. Kara was one broken but tough human being and some readers will say she is the heroine in this book. She is a heroine, but the one I think is truly the hero was Harry. He was the nucleus, the rock and her grounding man. I loved this book!!!

I loved this story! Not many romances have older main characters. The characters were fully fleshed out and very believable. I would recommend this book as a great read.

This story captivated me in the first few pages and kept me there until the end! All of the main characters are so fully developed as unique individuals and the family emotions are wonderfully described. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to read Phil’s story next. Thank you Marci Bolden.
