The Words We See

I’ve heard a lot about blackout poetry over the years I’ve taught, but it was always in an abstract way. Something I could admire and enjoy, but no real understanding of how to do it myself let alone explain it so my students would be successful in tackling it. After reading this book, with its examples and implementation instructions, I actually feel as if I could incorporate it into my lessons. Not only that, but the examples provided will help students visualize the possibilities of blackout poetry. Thank you for sharing!

I have been teaching poetry for awhile, and explaining mood in poetry can be really tough. I love that blackout poetry is a creative way for students to create their own poetry with a strong mood. I will definitely be teaching blackout poetry next year. I really appreciate that there are so many different examples, that demonstrate the different types of moods. I’m interested to see how this goes in my class, but I feel confident enough to try it now.
