Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham is at the top of his game in this novel of a raw, young basketball player with big dreams—and even bigger challenges off the court.

“Grisham is about as good a storyteller as we’ve got.”—The New York Times Book Review

Samuel “Sooley” Sooleymon is just seventeen years old when he and his South Sudanese teammates come to the United States to compete in a basketball tournament. The opportunity to be scouted by college coaches is a dream come true. Though he is an amazing athlete, his technical game needs work.

And then Sooley receives devastating news from home: as a result of the civil war raging across South Sudan, his father is dead, his sister is missing, and his mother and two younger brothers are in a refugee camp. Moved by his story, the coach of North Carolina Central offers him a scholarship. Sooley moves to Durham, enrolls in classes, and prepares to sit out his freshman season.

But Sooley has a fierce determination to improve. He works tirelessly on his game, and soon he’s dominating in practice. With the Central team losing and plagued by injuries, Sooley is called off the bench. But how far can he take his team? And will success allow him to save his family?

Could NOT put it down! Only when I came to the tragic end; even then I wanted another twist, a twist that would reunite mother & son! But it was not to be.

Really a good book about the sad state of the professional game and the effect on it players as well as the sad state of immigration to this Country. I loved seeing the game through Sooley’s eyes. That is how I remember the game. Not sure many kids get to see the game this way anymore!

I have to confess that I have never liked basketball at any level, but Gresham kept me interested from cover to cover. Always good to see a story about rags to riches and amazing talent.

I’ve been hooked on John Grisham novels for a very long time. When I came across his Sooley novel, I read it nonstop. I was so impressed to see that Seth Curry ( go Warriors) was included in the book because I live where the Warriors team lives. I was heartbroken upon reading that Sooley died; I wish the book would have gone on forever and Sooley would have continued into the spotlight of living out his dreams. One of my favorite books.

This story is mesmerizing and agonizing all at once. The angst I felt over the plight of Sooley’s family and his goal in helping them, and at the same time trying to navigate a new life in America kept me at the edge of my seat. I am not a sports fan and do not follow any favorite teams, and yet Mr. Grisham introduced me into the seductive world of professional basketball. I could not put the book down until it was finished. Thank you, Mr. Grisham for writing an incredible and unforgettable story. I hope aspiring athletes and agents can glean lessons learned from “having too much fun”.

Pretty long story that turned a bit boring (not typical for Grisham) with an unexpected ending...

I enjoyed the details about basketball and refugee camps. The book provides interesting behind the scenes facts for both areas. Sooley is not his typical legal genre but is used to describe some immigration law facts. The book has ups and downs. Admittedly I was shocked but in the end happy I had chosen to read this book.

This is my first John Grisham book and I enjoyed it. I felt that the ending went against the nature of the titular character some but it only means that the book was enjoyable enough to INVEST in the characters…

This engaging story made me laugh out loud, cheer for Sooley, and cry at the tragedy and atrocities. I came to love the characters and wish for their success. As a college basketball fan, I enjoyed the look into that world. As with every Grisham book I’ve read, I could not put it down.
