Description

Master storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this #1 New York Times bestselling and spellbinding novel about a young man who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.

Some parts of the book were quite entertaining. And Mr. King can always create pages that put you in the scene. And, who am I to find faults in a composition of such a great writer. But, I can’t resist, because this book in parts seemed like it was written by someone other than a person with Mr Kings talent. It could be simplistic and inconsistent in the books themes or logic. I realize it was fantasy but in side the fantasy, some consistency needs to be maintained . Just not my favorite.

Read a third of the book. After Mr. Bowditch,I am struggling…It’s hard to keep my attention while reading a book, so that is where the 4 stars come in. I will wait to the end to give it a 5th.

It was easy to get lost in the story and the context had to go back a few times to recap, but it sure was a fun Page turner

So much of the beginning is steeped in a great story of reality, that when the surreal tale did begin, I was afraid I’d get lost… but I did not. I was riveted!! Thanks again, Mr. King!

I can’t begin to say enough good about this book. So I’ll keep it short. I read this book in a week, up late in bed never once thinking about having to be up at 4am for work. If you are thinking about buying it, just do it. I was looking for something similar to the Gunslinger books. This hit the mark! Enjoy!

The book started as an interesting story, but became very bizarre as it progressed. I can say that part of the story could have been skipped, and I think it would have been more enjoyable.

I have read this book twice now and it is still my favorite. I have read hundreds of books but this one has a special place in my heart. Here’s a secret: the first time you read it, its amazing, but the second time: it solidifies that this is the best book you will have read. This book will rip your heart out and you’ll thank it for a job well done. Plus, who doesn’t love dogs?
