Description

"This blazing-hot forbidden romance manages to sensibly, and compassionately, capture the complexities of starting adult life after college and finding love and your identity in middle age. Cassie and Erin’s romance is by turns delightfully raunchy and deeply emotional. This reader hopes Wilsner keeps these scorchers coming." - The Washington Post

“[Wilsner writes] erotic yearning in a class all their own.” - Entertainment Weekly

From Meryl Wilsner, the acclaimed author of Something to Talk About, comes Mistakes Were Made, a sharp and sexy rom-com about a college senior who accidentally hooks up with her best friend’s mom.

When Cassie Klein goes to an off-campus bar to escape her school’s Family Weekend, she isn’t looking for a hookup—it just happens. Buying a drink for a stranger turns into what should be an uncomplicated, amazing one-night stand. But then the next morning rolls around and her friend drags her along to meet her mom—the hot, older woman Cassie slept with.

Erin Bennett came to Family Weekend to get closer to her daughter, not have a one-night stand with a college senior. In her defense, she hadn’t known Cassie was a student when they'd met. To make things worse, Erin’s daughter brings Cassie to breakfast the next morning. And despite Erin's better judgement—how could sleeping with your daughter’s friend be anything but bad?—she and Cassie get along in the day just as well as they did last night.

What should have been a one-time fling quickly proves impossible to ignore, and soon Cassie and Erin are sneaking around. Worst of all, they start to realize they have something real. But is being honest about the love between them worth the cost?

"Wilsner proves their serious romance range with a sophomore novel that laughs in the slow-burning face of their debut by kicking off with a hookup that'll have you fanning your face for days." - Buzzfeed

“A steaming hot, thoughtful story about all kinds of love, featuring a firecracker of a couple that’s impossible not to root for.” - Women's Health

Mistakes Were Made follows two queer women (I believe they are bisexual) who have a forbidden love. Erin is in her late 30’s and hooks up with her daughter’s friend, Cassie, who is 21. Parker, Erin’s daughter, ends up introduces the two and the story spirals from there. What I loved about the book was all the spicy scenes. 🌶️🌶️🌶️There were a lot! I also enjoyed the dual POV’s and feeling like I was inside of both of their worlds. Both characters struggled with issues internally and it made sense why they navigated the relationship in the manner that they did. There were moments where I felt like there was too much over explaining, but it made sense because I really felt like I got to know both characters. I will say that the second half of the book felt like it dragged a bit. I think there were certain issues that could have been resolved quicker and there were certain issues we could have spent a little more time on. I also wasn’t a big fan of the placement of the climaxes/resolutions. In addition, I wasn’t really a fan of Cassie’s best friends. I feel like there was a lot of emphasis put on the friendship that wasn’t really needed. Their friendship issues were centered around Cassie’s and Erin’s relationship. I wish they would have communicated differently in order to resolve their issues. I also wasn’t a fan of Erin and Cassie’s lack of communication. I wish we could have spent more time working through that. I’ll give the book a 3/5.

I wish there were more books like this out there. Wilsner, creates strong, empowered, sex positive characters and unlike Something to Talk About, the main characters have an unbelievable amount of sizzling chemistry. It’s easy for supporting characters to either be annoying or fade into the background but that’s not the case here. I could see Parker getting her own story at some point. Wilsner doesn’t hold back on the sexual relationship either and writes scenes that are actually representative of two wlw, which is so refreshing. So many books in this genre have sweet love stories but when it comes to the physical representation of that love story, it so often falls short with unrealistic or impractical sex. Or maybe I’m an outlier. Lol.

Mistakes Were Made is probably even better than Something to Talk About, and not just because it’s like 1600x steamier. Wilsner is the gold standand of wlw romcoms. Read this book.
