Description

The year is 1929, and newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton travel from Boston to the North Carolina mountains where they plan to create a timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new to the mountains—but she soon shows herself to be the equal of any man, overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving her husband's life in the wilderness. Together this lord and lady of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish all who fall out of favor. Yet when Serena learns that she will never bear a child, she sets out to murder the son George fathered without her. Mother and child begin a struggle for their lives, and when Serena suspects George is protecting his illegitimate family, the Pembertons' intense, passionate marriage starts to unravel as the story moves toward its shocking reckoning.

Rash's masterful balance of violence and beauty yields a riveting novel that, at its core, tells of love both honored and betrayed.

A truly fantastic book all the way to the ending. The book was so mesmerizing, I guess I expected more from the ending.

I good short story here. Serena is everything she says she is and exactly what you hope to never become. A story about how a driven person can get what they want, by sticking to their nature to the end.

Horrible book. Too long, plot too drawn out, should have been half the length and info more concise. Painful to read. Highly not recommended.
  • Predicatable, forced

Details don’t match up from chapter to chapter…either the horse is a gelding or a stallion etc. Entire book predictable and without original thought. Rash gives uneducated lumbermen the gift of excellent speech and grammar. His characters are not interesting. I only finished this book for a book club or else I would have moved on.

This is honestly one of the worst, if not the worst book I have ever read. Boring, pointless and uninteresting. I cannot believe they're making it into a movie...I'll definitely be skipping that one!!!!

This novel is a spectacular read and something out of the ordinary. The ending is wonderful as are the plot twists and character developments. Thumbs up to Ron Rash and his marvelously written book.

I enjoyed the book. It was so realistic that I felt as if I were living the experience along with the two main characters. I found the ending a bit incredible, but satisfying nevertheless. I would recommend it to others, especially those such as myself who are familiar with the history and geography of the Great Smoky Mountains, and how the national park came to be.

Very well written work, but in the end I just couldn't take the vile characters. Not fun reading.
  • Somewhat pointless....

This book is trying to tell a big story about evil in the world and how good ends up overcoming it in the end, but it falls flat. A lot of the passages are boooooring, and it just didn't catch.

I read a lot of books and don't always take the time to leave a review but this book was definitely worth the time! You can't beat it for the price and it left me thinking "why haven't they made a movie about this yet?!"
