Description

A medical mistake during an IVF procedure. An unthinkable situation . . . you’re pregnant with the wrong baby. You can terminate, but you can’t keep him. What choice would you make?

Carolyn and Sean Savage had been trying to expand their family for years. When they underwent an IVF transfer in February 2009, they knew it would be their last chance. If they became pregnant, they would celebrate the baby as an answer to their prayers. If not, they would be grateful for the family they had and leave their fertility struggles behind forever.

They never imagined a third option. The pregnancy test was positive, but the clinic had transferred the wrong embryos. Carolyn was pregnant with someone else’s baby.

The Savages faced a series of heartbreaking decisions: terminate the pregnancy, sue for custody, or hand over the infant to his genetic parents upon delivery. Knowing that Carolyn was carrying another couple’s hope for a baby, the Savages wanted to do what they prayed the other family would do for them if the situation was reversed. Sean and Carolyn Savage decided to give the ultimate gift, the gift of life, to a family they didn’t know, no strings attached.

Inconceivable provides an inside look at how modern medicine, which creates miracles daily, could allow such a tragic mistake, and the many legal ramifications that ensued with both the genetic family and the clinic. Chronicling their tumultuous pregnancy and its aftermath, which tested the Savage’s faith, their relationship to their church, and their marriage, Inconceivable is ultimately a testament to love. Carolyn and Sean loved this baby, making it impossible for them to imagine how they could give him life and then give him away.

In the end, Inconceivable is a story of what it is to be a parent, someone who nurtures a life, protects a soul, only to release that child into the world long before you’re ready to let him go.

This book was a very moving story, one I will never forget reading. I feel for Carolyn and Sean from the depths of my being. They are the most amazing couple ever!!!! I could never imagine going through something like this, doing what they did and having the strength to get through it. I absolutely could not put this book down, I read through it in 3 days !! We need more people in the world like this couple, they are selfless. I could not imagine having to turn a child over that you loved and carried in your body for 9 months. Even when the child isn't yours genetically, you nurtured and protected that child! That child could not have existed had she not been the vessel to give him life! Shannon and her husband should thank that woman every day of their lives, bc she could have chosen not to continue with a pregnancy she knew was going to bring her so much turmoil and sorrow, yet joy at bringing a new life into the world at the same time! I pray they have many blessings in their lives, because they truly deserve them!!!! I pray Shannon and her husband let them be a part of Logan's life and share him with them. That would be the greatest gift to them they could receive!!! They deserve to be a part of his life and watch him grow too, because it couldn't have happened at all without them. My thoughts and prayers to them always!!!

I heard about this story on Dateline, NBC. I thought that I had pretty much heard the whole story, since I knew what was going to happen throughout the book. However, the Savages did an incredible job of expressing their emotions in the book and allowing the reader to actually relate to what they were going through. They filled the book with so much more depth than was shared on television, that I could not put the book down, because I actually felt like I was in the room with them as they went through this journey. There are not many people left in the world like the Savages. I've tried to ask myself what I would do if my life was at risk and I was carrying someone else's baby. Would I continue the pregnancy? Would you continue the pregnancy? That is a really difficult question! The Savages are amazing people who gave an amazing gift of life to the Morells. I only hope and pray that good things finally come their way! Hopefully this book will inspire more people to treasure the gift of life the way the Savages do. They should be considered for Sainthood!
