Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A newspaperman watches as former jurors drop like flies in this riveting legal thriller hailed as “classic Grisham, full of excitement and colorful characters” (The Denver Post).

“One of his best: a thoughtful and atmospheric thriller.”—The New York Times

In 1970, Willie Traynor comes to Clanton, Mississippi, in a Triumph Spitfire and a fog of vague ambitions. Within a year, the twenty-three-year-old finds himself the owner of Ford County’s only newspaper, famous for its well-crafted obituaries. While the rest of America is in the grips of turmoil, Clanton lives on the edge of another age—until the brutal murder of a young mother rocks the town and thrusts Willie into the center of a storm.

Daring to report the true horrors of the crime, Willie makes as many friends as enemies in Clanton, and over the next decade he sometimes wonders how he got there in the first place. But he can never escape the crime that shattered his innocence or the criminal whose evil left an indelible stain. Because as the ghosts of the South’s past gather around Willie, as tension swirls around Clanton, men and women who served on a jury nine years ago are starting to die one by one—as a killer exacts the ultimate revenge.

I laughed, I cried and I could hardly wait for the next chapter. The characters and situations took me back to the time I spent in the South. Thank you for a great story.

Good start, moderately entertaining middle and lack luster finish. Not Grisham’s best work.

One of Grisham’s best. Fine character development of Miss Callie and Willie, the narrator.

a complete and utter mess of a story. Jumps around haphazardly and by the end you just don’t care. Weak Mr Grisham, weak

Enjoyed this book so much on vacation sitting on my balcony looking out to sea. It kept me glued to find out what happened next, like a good book should. I was hooked from the first few pages, horrified by the events, laughed, got teary eyed, and absolutely loved it! Grisham is just one of many authors that makes me love reading.

This is my favorite John Grisham book thus far, including his latest five books including his most recent one, Partners. Not only is the lead character not a lawyer, but he's almost totally ignorant of the law. This will change, however. It's always good to see old characters come back into his books. Lucian Willbanks and Harry Rex are two of my favorites. Ms. Callie's stories had me totally amused and I did not miss a word when she spoke or was spoken of. Will she appear in later books? You will have to read this to find out.

From the start the book grabs you and doesn't let you go. The way Grisham involves you in the story is incredible. Wish it wouldn't have finished.

I enjoyed the story. Not just the novel, but the stories within the novel. The respect with which Grisham treats his characters as well as his audience is unique. The unpleasantness in life is not belabored, it is simply stated without too much attention, just enough to be appropriate and descriptive. I hated to see this novel end, I could spend time reading about Willie's life and his dear friend, Miss Callie, for a few hundred more pages.
