“An undisputed master of suspense and terror.” —The Washington Post
Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Finally Read It
4By erismarieI’ve been meaning to read this book for years but never got around to completing it. Finally, I’ve finished the book and I understand more about the Overlook and Danny that felt unanswered in the movie. While the first few parts of the book felt overly descriptive and long, it felt necessary when you get towards the end of the book and everything that makes the characters come full circle. I’ve seen the Doctor Sleep movie but now I plan on reading it. I’ve always been a Stephen King fan and analyzing his writing style is always a pleasure.Great read
4By Blippy17Slow burn, but worth it.Finally got around to this fantastic read
5By Nleclair198Well, the graphic images of the evil Overlook will certainly keep me up at night. But I find myself most saddened by the desperate attempts of a well-meaning father who’s trying to do right by his family. Humans trying to conquer their own demons is more haunting than anything supernatural.Good read

5By Tyler H from CharlotteFavorite book so far by Stephen King! The book was so much better than the movie in my opinion but I do think the movie did very good at picking the characters based on their descriptions and personalities in the book.Gave Me Some Nightmare Fuel
5By lrhines1Enjoyed this read and comparing it to the Stanley Kubrick adaptation. I understand that things had to be changed to appeal and make sense in a movie. This story has so much more depth to it than the movie does and has me thinking so much about the roles and relationships between a father and son.Another Steven King Bestseller
5By Keith Sk.Steven King is not an author, he is a story teller, and he hit it out of the park with this book!Stephen King’s The Shining: The true masterpiece of modern horror!
5By dfantknHaving revered The Shining as one of my favorite horror films, I finally decided to read the source material for such a good but different film. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that this book was hundreds of times better than the movie. New layers of depth added to all characters and plot points. Being able to point at the ballroom scene in the book and compare it to the movie was a treat. It has so much more meaning in the book, and going back and watching the movie, it adds more depth to those scenes. A read that everyone should enjoy!!Just read it
5By loganessmomaI thought I loved the movie but it’s a pale comparison to this book. Wonderfully heartbreaking and beautifully written.Amazing
5By Sammy4533This book gave a complete outcome of the Shining, let’s you really see how bad the movie was produced. A book of course will always be better than the movie, but in this case the movie left out lots of Stephen Kings book, including the Ending, the Overlooks actual outside hedge animals, roque court, playground. There wasn’t a maze at all. So many changes made by the movie after reading the book made the book scarier than the movie. A must read for sure!Classic King thriller!
5By Skyzone85What a classic setting for a really scary idea. Love the characters & for me it’s the best book of the King library no doubt. It’s got so much more to offer then even the movie does so i think it’s a must read in any order u want.My Favorite Book
5By AddyM.Couldn’t put down! Stephen King’s books never surprise me but this is by far my favorite!
