Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of three Oprah Book Club Picks including The River Is Waiting—Wally Lamb takes us on an extraordinary journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years.

“Mine is a story of craving: an unreliable account of lusts and troubles that began, somehow, in 1956 on the day our free television was delivered....”

Meet Dolores Price. She’s thirteen, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Beached like a whale in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally rolls into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she’s determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before really going belly up.

In this extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years. At once a fragile girl and a hard-edged cynic, so tough to love yet so inimitably lovable, Dolores is as poignantly real as our own imperfections. She’s Come Undone includes a promise: you will never forget Dolores Price.

Oh my god. This I think is a story that won’t ever leave me. There were points I didn’t think I could go on. I was so consumed I couldn’t put it down. And what a great way to end the story. The past few books I’ve read I hated the endings and this was just perfect. So glad I read this

If I could give this book "0" stars, I would. This truly is the worst New York Times Bestseller/Oprah's Book Club disgusting, mis-guided literary effort imaginable. Coming of age story? What lessons does this self-loathing vermin of a human being learn, exactly? She certainly never learns that shutting herself in her room, eating her way through the junk food aisle won't help. She never learns that showing love & affection towards those she has been blessed with in her life is a gift of love you should treasure because you may lose it one day. I wish you luck. If you can find something redeeming in these words (And yes, there are typos everywhere, as the others mentioned before) then perhaps one of us will get our money's worth out of this book.

I read this book as a teenager and developed a resentment toward the main character. I reread it now at 23 and can say that I fully understand Delores and all of her discrepancies. Love this book. One I always go back to.

Another story about a broken person and her path to becoming whole. It's probably a good book for people who enjoy that sort of story but I prefer books with a more active plot line.

What an absolutely amazing book! This story made me so incredibly emotional. I grew very attached to Dolores. I wanted to jump into the book and shake her and be her friend all at the same time. The author did an incredible job at making the reader fully understand the main character's journey without being repetitive or boring. I didn't want to put this book down. We've all come a little 'undone' at some point in our lives. This story is a gentle reminder that we can overcome the difficult times!
  • I want to meet Dolores Price

I came across this book searching for a riveting read and I read all the reviews online and here. I was convinced. When I opened the booked and read the intro Wally mentioned someone saying he wants to meet Dolores. After reading this book, I would absolutely love to meet Dolores also. This is a page turner. I loved it. Next up "I Know This Much Is True"
  • What a mess, ZERO stars

All the fab reviews sounded great. Story started out to be interesting, but just got worse and worse. Angry, hateful, abused and abusive main character who had, for me, no redeeming qualities. I'm not into lesbian literature and don't think all men are Neanderthals, so would have appreciated knowing the POV before I spent the $ for this. Trudged through half the book and started feeling ashamed for wasting my time on this, before giving up and deleting it from my ipad. It's that bad. Pointless, depressing, uninspiring, and worst of all really boring. Why did I keep reading? Kept hoping I hadn't wasted the time I'd already spent. Later saw other review sites which give more balanced, less glowing reviews. Wish I'd checked them out first.

This book renewed my joy of reading. Delores Price is one of literature's greatest characters. She comes undone and struggles to put herself back together in a journey she and the reader take together. Marvelous through and through.

The girl is a mess! And then something funny happens - she gets worse. And then better, and then worse again, and then... But I kept rooting for her, wanting her to learn from her mistakes and be happy. Powerful story!
