Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From America’s favorite storyteller comes a moving novel of fathers and sons, forgiveness and redemption, hailed as “an enjoyable, heartwarming read that’s not just for baseball fans” (USA Today).

“Grisham knocks it out of the park.”—The Washington Post

It’s the summer of 1973, and Joe Castle is the boy wonder of baseball, the greatest rookie anyone has ever seen. The kid from Calico Rock, Arkansas, dazzles Chicago Cubs fans as he hits home run after home run, politely tipping his hat to the crowd as he shatters all rookie records.

Calico Joe quickly becomes the idol of every baseball fan in America, including Paul Tracey, the young son of a hard-partying and hard-throwing New York Mets pitcher. On the day that Warren Tracey finally faces Calico Joe, Paul is in the stands, rooting for his idol but also for his dad.

Then Warren throws a fastball that will change their lives forever.

I liked this book very much. You gotta love baseball for it to get through but, if you do, it’s a wonderful tale.

An excellent story that takes the reader’s emotion to a high level as Calico Joe succeeds in baseball, and then to a low as he is injured by his “own” father with a baseball to the head. Then as time goes on, and many years pass, his father who apologized infrequently, came back and apologized to Joe before going back to Florida and dying.

A story of bad behavior and redemption. East to read and feel empathy for the characters.

Traveling to and from work every day makes for a long undesirable time. In addition to having kids at home that want attention constantly, books are not much of an option. Picking this audio book proved great for hearing the “action” of the book and a chance to see Grisham at work. I would highly recommend this as a quick read. I can’t wait for my oldest baseball child to jump into this so we can talk about the greats spotlighted in the novel and how one individual can impact a sport.

This was the first John Grisham sports book that I read. I actually enjoyed the read and loved the characters. There were no big surprises as he does in his legal thrillers.

A very tedious, bitter story filled with statistics, names and dates. Subpar for Grishom.

Grisham is an easy to read author who in his early days had a story to tell but no longer. He just phones it in.

Being Jg's third book of sports fiction that I have read, I must say I would just prefer he give up writing everything else. Don't get me wrong, I have read or listened to just about every book he has published, but I get much more enjoyment out of his sports novels, even though they are not as well written.

Wow! This is not Grisham at his greatest fast action packed self. It's Grisham at his deadliest. He is so good at details that you keep hoping that this book isn't taking you where you are sure he is going! Unfortunately, what should have been a chapter becomes an entire book? Yes folks this is even deadlier that the game of baseball and golf, and did I mention slower

This book was the first book I've ever read from John Grisham. Ever since then I only like to read book from this author. I read the series Theodore Boone and I am waiting for the fourth one to come out. Right now I reading Bleachers and so far it has been good. John Grisham is the best author in my opinion and I hope to read more books from this author.
  • Wonderful story. All baseball fans should read it.

John Grisham is a wonderful story teller. Taking his obvious love for baseball and mixing in the father son story is great. I was afraid it would be too cheesy but its not. It's truthful and pure. If you liked Bleachers and Playing for Pizza then get this book!
  • Fast quick great easy read

Another great story from one of America's great stoytellers. Grisham's stories about lawyers and legal stuff have all been fantastic, but it's a nice change to see a novel built around baseball, a father and a son. I couldn't put it down until the end!
  • Really good!!

Grisham does a great job in creating this fictitious story around actual events providing the reader with a sense of "true story" telling. It wasn't as heart felt as "bleachers", but really good none the less. Definitely a must read for anybody, regardless if you're a baseball fan or not

A very enjoyable book. Easy to read. Yet hard to put down. It makes you feel that it is a true story. But, that's John Grisham for you....

Great book. He really has a nack for getting the reader absorbed into the tale. The final 50 pages are hard to put down. Really knows his baseball.
