I can understand why this book is so popular amongst a majority of readers, but I realized less than halfway through that it was simply not my preferred style. I think Miller’s adaptation of this epic Greek tale has an intriguing, fresh approach (her efforts did not go unnoticed), but in my honest opinion, the prose and dialogue felt slow and a bit dull for me at times. I had trouble sympathizing with Patrocles, who came off like an endlessly self-deprecating pity-party. The romance aspect felt predictable and hardly thrilling for me. I ultimately decided to finish this novel in the hopes that it would become more interesting later on, but even the most climactic moments of the story left me wondering… is that all?

i am relatively new to the greek mythology world; i actually think this is the first book i’ve read aside from the odyssey in high school but this is one of my favorite books i have ever read. the way madeline writes is so captivating, and the characters are so palpable. it is a completely refreshing take on such a retold story, and the relationship between patroclus and achilles so needed this makeover. i don’t cry easily from stories/ movies but i cried all throughout this book.

  • “Enhanced edition” is dumb

I got the enhanced edition because it was the same price as the regular edition, but the enhanced features were lame. There is a link when certain characters first appear that shows a synopsis of their story and an illustration — that’s it. And the character descriptions were all full of spoilers! I had to stop reading them. And then later in the book when I actually would have liked a little character description to call up there were none to be had. Also, which characters do and do not have a description appeared to be entirely random. Don’t buy the enhanced edition.

Great fun summer read, I enjoyed reading this especially not he beach !I was a bit hesitant it was going to turn into the movie Troy which I was pleasantly surprised it did not. How many times have you been told about the Trojan horse, I was dreading reading about this again and let’s just say no need to worry.

Downloaded this as a sample, as I’d been really looking forward to reading this, and for whatever f-king reason there was a video at the end of the book sample. I click on the video, it’s an interview with the author on rewriting this book or some crap. Literally 30 seconds into the this video she just outright says the ending. Why the f-k would they put this f-king video in with a sample of a book? Thanks Apple Books. 👎🏻 guess I’ll skip this one.

Absolutely incredible, life-changing read. The prose is beautiful, the love between Patroclus and Achilles is wonderfully fleshed-out, the thematic issues surrounding on humanity and identity are thought-provoking...I could go on forever. This book influenced the way I understand love and the human soul today. It’s a beautiful retelling of a beautiful story written in a beautiful way. I cried so many times throughout the book, and it can still bring tears to my eyes to this day. Miller continues the multi-millennia tradition of storytelling about the Trojan War in a timeless and extremely moving way, and this book deserves the same legitimacy and respect as any other work based on the Iliad and/or the Trojan War.

The reviews of this book that struggle with the love between Achilles and Patroclus say more about the readers than they do the story. For me the portrayal of their love was as visceral and compelling as it was realistic based on an entirely plausible interpretation of The Iliad. This is what love feels like between any two lovers, regardless of their gender. I couldn’t put this book down.

I loved this book. It made the relationship between the Achilles and Patroclus and the bond they shared make sense on so many levels. The portrait of Thetis was a surprisingly hostile one. She appears far more serene in the poem than she does here. That may be the only issue I had with the book, besides the fact that it wasn’t gay enough.
  • Definitely a recommend read!!

This has been a few of the stories I have genuinely enjoyed and had a hard time putting down. It was recommended through a mutual friend, and found it hard to believe someone out there has thought out this whole story line, something I was thinking since the first time we read the Iliad back in 10th grade in my high school years. It’s incredible. I loved it.

The book was very cool and enticing, it's hard to get past the homosexuality of Achilles and Patroclus but besides that it's pretty cool. I think it would've been better if Achilles and Patroclus were just good friends instead of lovers.
