Like most “survival” books, this one seems to miss the most important point of survival situations: avoid activity that might put you in a survival situation! That being said, many people exceed their limitations while hiking, camping, or hunting. This book gives sound, basic advice on how to attempt to deal with unexpected events during such activities. While most of the advice is common sense, some of the suggested solutions would require training, practice, and a bit of luck to be successful, and others deal with rather far fetched survival possibilities. Overall The Ultimate Survival Manual does not quite live up the hyperbole of its title, but is an easy and reaonably thorough, if not quite comprehensive primer on getting yourself out of trouble when things go bad.
