Finally! A fun art conservation book! I just finished this and, as an aspiring art conservator, I enjoyed it very much. I'll be starting my college art history classes this fall....I'm glad I read this first! It definitely makes you look at paintings in a whole new light. I look forward to more (hopefully!) from this author.
  • Mona Lisa

Short but sweet. This book provides an insight into how all students will soon be learning. Sanstead's passion for art and seeing the Mona Lisa in her "as close to original state" is refreshing.

This was my first look at Apple's new interactive book creation software product. I am 'blown away' by this implementation. Warmest regards. Phil Van Kersen
  • Art history for the layman

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it while at an airport, and I could not put it down. This is not art history as your grandfather learned. It is fresh, simple and the author seems to think that art history is important to the layman--not just to his fellow ph.d.s I am looking more from this author, and I hope that he will delve into larger subjects. Oh, and I showed this to my six-year-old daughter, and now, she wants to go to a museum. How about that? Worth the $2.99.
  • Lively, informative, fresh

This iBook exploits the unique capabilities of the iPad medium to reinforce its thesis: that oil paintings deteriorate, especially if they have been lacquered. Drawing from his encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, the author weaves a compelling story how the most famous portrait in the world has be even tragically mutilated by time and inept attempts to restore it. I learned much and look forward to future adventures in learning.

As a conservator, I would recommend this to my clients and undergraduate students. The ability to see before-and-after shots of real-world examples is priceless. In fact, I showed this book to some of my students the other day, and they enjoyed the experience.
  • Misleading Title

The title is completely misleading. This book does discuss and demonstrate restoration of masterpieces. However, Mona Lisa is NOT one of them. I would have loved to have seen what Mona Lisa would have looked like after the author applied the same digital "cleaning/restoring" technique as described in the book.

Love the images in this iBook. And it really shows the potential of the interactive book format. But mostly I love looking at the images and having interesting things to hear and read about them literally at my fingertips. And for only $2.99? 5 stars. Can't wait to see more iBooks from Lee Sandstead.
