Description

New York Times Bestseller

“Like Gone Girl, Reconstructing Amelia seamlessly marries a crime story with a relationship drama. And like Gone Girl, it should be hailed as one of the best books of the year.”  — Entertainment Weekly

The stunning debut novel from Kimberly McCreight in which a single mother reconstructs her teenaged daughter Amelia’s tragic death, sifting through her emails, texts, and social media to piece together the shocking truth about the last days of her life.

Kate's in the middle of the biggest meeting of her career when she gets the telephone call from Grace Hall, her daughter’s exclusive private school in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Amelia has been suspended, effective immediately, and Kate must come get her daughter—now. But Kate’s stress over leaving work quickly turns to panic when she arrives at the school and finds it surrounded by police officers, fire trucks, and an ambulance. By then it’s already too late for Amelia. And for Kate.

An academic overachiever despondent over getting caught cheating has jumped to her death. At least that’s the story Grace Hall tells Kate. And clouded as she is by her guilt and grief, it is the one she forces herself to believe. Until she gets an anonymous text: She didn’t jump.

Reconstructing Amelia is about secret first loves, old friendships, and an all-girls club steeped in tradition. But, most of all, it’s the story of how far a mother will go to vindicate the memory of a daughter whose life she couldn’t save.

First I will say that this book held my attention and kept me wanting to find out what happened. It was not what I would consider suspenseful - just interesting...ish. I found quite a bit of the story unrealistic and then the whole plot was so disjointed. Rather than having several issues coming together for one conclusion, each separate issue had it’s own random “twist”/conclusion. It didn’t come together and I kept thinking “there is no way all of this would happen to one person”. I only paid $2 for this one but I would’ve been disappointed if I’d spent more.

Decent story, but not one that I couldn't put down. It lacked suspense. I read out of curiosity not because it was a gripping mystery. Just ok.
  • Clever.

I enjoyed this novel a lot. I loved how it wasn't like every other novel. I felt deeply connected to the characters and loved it's format. Nicely done.

I'm not usually one to read, but I loved this book!! I couldn't ever put it down, there's so many good twist and turns which makes it very interesting to read. it's also very relatable to teenagers now because bullying in a huge part of teenagers lives in schools.
  • Good read!

I was nervous to read this based on some of the reviews saying it was poorly written and far fetched. But it's a book after all and I figured it should be far fetched! I couldn't put it down! I thought the story was believable and relatable... Would recommend to others!
