SAMPLE EXCERPT:

“What was the inspiration behind the creation of this book?”

As a decorated veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Karl Marlantes wrote “What It Is Like to Go to War” as an attempt to come to terms with his own experiences in combat. Like his previous book, “Matterhorn” – the reflection, synthesis, and writing of this book took more than thirty years. For the most part, he drew from his experiences in the Vietname War, which he meaningless without serving any purpose whatsoever.
The violence of this particular war, was Marlantes’ key inspiration. Apart from the physical damage inherent in combat, Marlantes also explores his personal views about how war assaults one’s ethics, psyche and soul equally. Men in the battlefield, experience this not just from suffering violence from the enemy forces, but also from the violence they inflict on others. According to Marlantes, the effect of violence on a warrior’s spiritual and mental health is something that is usually ignored or unexplored by the public. It was Marlantes’ intention as a writer to tell this part of the story which is often hidden or left untold.
