The Counterfeit Agent
By Alex Berenson
- Release Date: 2014-02-11
- Genre: Mysteries & Thrillers
Description
“Berenson’s strength is his deep understanding of geopolitics and of the shoddy compromises it demands. He clearly has excellent contacts in the world of shadows. Wells is a complex and satisfying protagonist, tackling bad guys across the world’s conflict zones.”--The New York Times Book Review
John Wells goes undercover as the threat of nuclear war skyrockets between the United States and Iran, in the cutting-edge new novel from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author.
In an Istanbul hotel, a deep source warns a CIA agent that Iran intends to kill a CIA station chief. Quickly, John Wells is called in to investigate, but before he can get far, the tip comes true. Which means that the next warning the source gives will be taken very seriously indeed. And it’s a big one. We’ve put a package on a ship from Dubai to the United States. A radioactive one. A bomb? Not yet. It’s a test run.
As the threat level jumps and the government mobilizes, something still doesn’t smell right to Wells’s old CIA boss Ellis Shafer, and so he sends Wells on a private mission to find out what’s going on. But the two of them are swimming against the tide. From Guatemala to Thailand to Hong Kong to Istanbul, Wells uses every skill he has, including his ability to go undercover in the Arab world, to chase down leads. But it might not be enough. Soon there might be nothing anyone can do to pull the United States back from the brink of war.

Ending stinks
1By Pam355Actually it’s the lack of an ending that stinks. I enjoyed 398 pages, then basically “now we have 12 days to fix this mess... now buy our next book to see what we do”. Last Wells book for me.Another great one...
5By PtvogelzangAbsolutely fantastic and another great one in the series. But, Alex, tiny quibble...A shot at Provo?!?! I’m a BYU alum, and Provo’s awesome, at least to me :) Irrespective, great book!Counterfit Agent
3By Peanuts.123Did not like the ending at all.The counterfeit agent
3By JdhND71Very unsatisfying endingGood book, ending is crap.
3By Hobbie hallEven a half assed ending would have earned 4 stars.. Be prepared to be disappointed in the ending. Obviously the next book will pick up right where this one left off but when will that be??The Counterfeit Agent
5By Buckshot09I thought the book was well done. I liked the ending even though it left you hanging until the next book..................Very well paced.$12.99 for 384 pages with no ending!
3By GCLawI love the characters, Wells, Duto and Schaffer. But it seems that Berenson has run out of new ideas and is now just rehashing the old ones. Nuclear device on its way to America, John Wells, with the help of Schaffer, stops it at the last minute, despite Duto's efforts to foil him. Then we are left with the US and China on the brink of war with no resolution. That's the ending. No answers to the questions that the book raises. It's as if the book ends 2/3 of the way through the story. I would criticize the ending if there was one, but there isn'tI should have heeded others' reviews
3By Glenview readerDon't get me wrong, I like Alex Berenson and I liked this book but...the ending CLEARLY is "to be continued". I will have forgotten the storyline before I actually get to see the ending. Not a satisfier.Counterfeit Agent
2By 66+Started out and read like he other great Well's stories . However, I guess the author must have been told by the publishers to cut it short or he needs the money from a next book. Ending sucked and a real disappointment from what I used to consider a good author. BrianHalf a story
1By Dgb65Ripoff, tell half a story and let the suckers wait for a finish. No warning, buyer beware.
