INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Burden’s searing, probing memoir explores . . . what she learned about intimacy and her own spirit.”—People
“A beautifully written instant classic. Strangers is gripping and heartbreaking and a must-read for every wife—and husband.”—Graydon Carter
“Asks us to examine life’s most perplexing questions: Can we see the invisible fault lines in a marriage or truly know the people closest to us?”—Lori Gottlieb
It was a great love story, one for the ages. The speed of our beginning and the speed of our ending felt like matching bookends. They both came out of nowhere. He wanted it, he wanted me. And then he didn’t.
In March 2020, Belle Burden was safe and secure with her family at their house on Martha’s Vineyard, navigating the early days of the pandemic together—building fires in the late afternoons, drinking whisky sours, making roast chicken. Then, with no warning or explanation, her husband of twenty years announced that he was leaving her. Overnight, her caring, steady partner became a man she hardly recognized. He exited his life with her like an actor shrugging off a costume.
In Strangers, Burden revisits her marriage, searching for clues that her husband was not who she always thought he was. As she examines her relationship through a new lens, she reckons with her own family history and the lessons she intuited about how a woman is expected to behave in the face of betrayal. Through all of it, she is transformed. The discreet, compliant woman she once was—someone nicknamed “Belle the Good”—gives way to someone braver, someone determined to use her voice.
With unflinching honesty and profound grace, Burden charts a path through heartbreak to show the power of a woman who refuses to give up on love. Strangers is a stunning, deeply moving, compulsively readable memoir heralding the arrival of a thrilling new literary talent.
Reviews
A bold reclaiming of self
5By step 687532I am awe-struck by the author boldness. I bought this book seeking a juicy, tell-all-drama from one divorced woman’s lips to this divorced woman’s ear. But I found much more: courageous vulnerability and tender understanding not just of a partner who did the unthinkable, but also towards the version of herself who wholeheartedly loved and believed in him. Most of all, I found myself inspired and challenged by her headstrong refusal to suffer in silence so society can be comfortable.Heartfelt and meaningful.
4By Pegasus VanGloriusLove this book.Gripping Memoir
5By Talker26Could not stop reading. Belle told an age-old story that made you feel every emotion. Belle: the answer you seek is so obvious - he fell out of love. I can’t wait to hear about you meeting and falling in love with a great guy. You deserve every happiness.Such a good read!!
5By nikkipooh123As soon as I saw a tiktok clip of Oprah and Belle talking about the book I knew I wanted to read it ... and my, it did not disappoint! A great read and absolutely wonderfully written! Thank you BelleOspreys
4By mema of miaIt kept my interest from beginning to end. I admired her for not trashing her ex, even though I felt like he deserved worse. Apparently Belle is an empathic woman, her intentions are not to gain sympathy but to heal herself. A beautiful story of survival, forgiveness and redemption.Life is hard
5By MahDGA beautifully written memoir of a most awful time in the authors life !Must read
5By Mariana SucreBeautifully written.Good, not great
3By supersupersuper fanHaving spent many years facilitating a divorce recovery group, as well as going through the process myself, I can relate to many of the author’s experiences. However, many women have both the loss of love and income to contend with. Real financial insecurity is scary beyond belief. Belle seemed to do a fare autopsy of the divorce but never really identified her part in the break up of the relationship. All in all, a decent read.Great Read
4By PattiLarkinInteresting story and uplifting to anyone who was betrayed in a long term relationship who's finding it hard to move on.Beautifully written

5By Lily's ThoughtsAbsolutely obsessed. Every woman should readUNDERWHELMED
2By nigel loganberUnderwhelmed. Not sure why it was touted as a great read. The writing had no creativity. Felt like I was simply hearing about a woman who was recounting her marriage and divorce proceedings. Nothing original about feelings or what she went through. It was a story that was filled with very predictable judgements from their friends and feelings one would typically go through. A very long and laborious read. Would not recommend.Amazed by Belle’s resilience & strength
4By noneSL“Behind strong people there is a story that gave them no choice”Excellent. Raw. Important.
5By Yogi bear 2015This book was so raw, it was hard to read her pain. I felt it. I love this story. It’s so important for honesty and change in deep rooted beliefs. Thank you for this excellent book!Wow.
