The people generally known as the Aztecs called themselves “Mexica” (méxìcâ). “Aztec” means ‘from Aztln’, the mythical starting point of the Mexica's migration to the south. Their language was called nhuatl or nhuatlàtlli ‘clear speech’ or even méxìcatlàtlli ‘Mexica speech’.
