Description

Brody Markham has endured a nightmare. Home after spending the last five years in prison, Brody is trying to survive in a world he no longer recognizes. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, Alyssa is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way money can’t buy.

Maybe Alyssa recognizes some of the same characteristics in Brody that she sees in her homeless wards. Or maybe she just sees his struggle to surface from the darkness, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

When secrets are uncovered, Brody has to decide if he’s going to give in to the darkness or accept the light that Alyssa offers him.

I loved this book. It was the first Sawyer Bennett book I ever read and have since read everything she writes. She is my favorite online author and I can't wait for the next book to come out.
  • Hidden in the fillers is a great plot, but in order to find it I had to skim.

I'm finding the story to be overly detailed. Sawyer is trying to paint Alyssa as some intuitive character, but it feels forced. After one day with Brody she seems to have him all figured out. Rather than explain Brody's character through the eyes of Alyssa why not inform the reader what we should really understand about Brody. Alyssa speculating about Brody does not help me understand his true character. Brody spent enough time prejudging her in the beginning. Brody watches Alyssa work in the animal shelter and gets this epiphany that she is not the rich heiress he claimed her of being. This story is hard to settle into. I'm feeling a disconnect with the characters due to the over wording of the story. Alyssa overthinks and overanalyzes each situation. The girls are very shallow minded characters. The author fights hard to disprove misjudgment and labeling for some characters but then others it's blatantly obvious that some people fit into a certain label. Once I filter through the word fillers by skimming the story to get to the heart of the plot then it's not a bad story.
