Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the master of the legal thriller comes a “deeply engaging and enjoyable” (USA Today) novel featuring one of John Grisham’s most colorful, outrageous, and vividly drawn characters ever.

ONE OF THE WASHINGTON POST AND NPR’S BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR

On the right side of the law—sort of—Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He drinks small-batch bourbon and carries a gun. His office is a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, and fine leather chairs. He has no firm, no partners, and only one employee: his heavily armed driver, who also happens to be his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddie.

Sebastian defends people other lawyers won’t go near: a drug-addled, tattooed kid rumored to be in a satanic cult; a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house.

Why these clients? Because Sebastian believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial—even if he has to bend the law to secure one.

Please, please, if you are expecting a “Grisham” novel look elsewhere. Two short stories linked by an unlikeable character! I forced myself to finish as punishment for a terrible purchase!

Very intriguing book. A completely different contrary viewpoint towards law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Very detailed and engrossing. Gresham hit a home run with this one.

I usually cannot wait to read a Grisham book. Unfortunately this was not worth my time or $$. Unimaginative and down right boring. Couldn't even bother to finish it. Yawn.

I read this novel quickly and found myself relating to Sebastian Rudd on so many levels. This was probably one of my favorite John Grisham novels to date. So many people don’t understand that Lawyers are faced with so many ethical dillemas constantly and if you are representing Criminal Defendants you may find yourself in similar situations as Rudd. I felt like Rudd, while imperfect and certainly willing to cross some ethical lines, ultimately was trying to do what was best for his client and even worked for free on some of the cases out of a moral obligation. Being a lawyer is one of the most difficult jobs I have come to realize. There are many easier things that a person could do to make money, but good lawyers are needed to help people who can’t help themselves through the court system. I got a kick out of the fact that Rudd had a mobile office in a sprinter van and had his own driver and would pack his golf clubs and take off for several days after a long trial. Once again, John Grisham’s characters hit close to home and the way he develops his characters is always outstanding.
