Description

The pleasure of your company is requested at Warbury Park. Four lovely ladies will arrive… but only one can become a duchess.

James, the scandalously uncivilized Duke of Harland, requires a bride with a spotless reputation for a strictly business arrangement. Lust is prohibited and love is out of the question.

Four ladies. Three days. What could go wrong?

She is not like the others…Charlene Beckett, the unacknowledged daughter of an earl and a courtesan, has just been offered a life-altering fortune to pose as her half-sister, Lady Dorothea, and win the duke’s proposal. All she must do is:

* Be the perfect English rose [Ha!]

* Breathe, smile, and curtsy in impossibly tight gowns [blast Lady Dorothea’s sylph-like figure]

* Charm and seduce a wild duke [without appearing to try]

* Keep said duke far, far from her heart [no matter how tempting]

When secrets are revealed and passion overwhelms, James must decide if the last lady he should want is really everything he needs. And Charlene must decide if the promise of a new life is worth risking everything . . . including her heart.

This is a great book. It was a little Cinderella-ish and definitely more daring than your typical Regency romance. There is even a biracial child woven beautifully into the story. It was refreshing in so many ways. This is my first book by this author and I'm so glad I found her.

From the get-go, How the Duke Was Won had me. This is a book that tucks you in the character's coat pocket and transports you from a London bawdy to the English country side, bearing witness to a ducal attempt at arranging his own marriage of convenience. Loved this book for so many reasons - the plot moved at great pace with turns that not only kept me completely and totally invested. I loved the characters - not only Charlene & James, but the supporting cast who ranged from an artistic prodigy to a perfect villain. They helped give this story it's vibrancy and made me want to get to know them better. Charlene Beckett is the one of those heroines who is a woman before her time. In society's eyes, she is less-than, but within the first pages, it is clear she has more strength and courage than all the members of the Royal Army. Her so-called rough surface belies her amazing heart, which beats for her mother and sister, to give them a better life, away from the Covent Gardens. James is fascinating in his own right. He is the antithesis of a high born nobleman. Though motivated by money, it's not necessarily to line his own pockets, but to broaden worldview and improve lives. He has vision that doesn't align with his peers, but he is willing to take steps to change minds and hearts. Not to say that James is all work -- it is impossible not to fall in love with him -- much like Charlene, the rough edges are mere walls around a heart that are easily scaled by a equally determined soul. Do get your hands on this book and be prepared to get lost. Happy reading!!
