Description

LOTS OF CHARACTERS GET COMPARED TO MY OWN JACK REACHER, BUT PETRIE'S PETER ASH IS THE REAL DEAL.—Lee Child

*An Entertainment Weekly Must List Pick

In the new novel featuring war veteran Peter Ash, “an action hero of the likes of Jack Reacher or Jason Bourne” (Lincoln Journal-Star), Ash has a woman’s life in his hands—and her mystery is stranger than he could ever imagine.

War veteran Peter Ash sought peace and quiet among the towering redwoods of northern California, but the trip isn’t quite the balm he’d hoped for. The dense forest and close fog cause his claustrophobia to buzz and spark, and then he stumbles upon a grizzly, long thought to have vanished from this part of the country. In a fight of man against bear, Peter doesn’t favor his odds, so he makes a strategic retreat up a nearby sapling.

There, he finds something strange: a climbing rope, affixed to a distant branch above. It leads to another, and another, up through the giant tree canopy, and ending at a hanging platform. On the platform is a woman on the run. From below them come the sounds of men and gunshots.

Just days ago, investigative journalist June Cassidy escaped a kidnapping by the men who are still on her trail. She suspects they’re after something belonging to her mother, a prominent software designer who recently died in an accident. June needs time to figure out what’s going on, and help from someone with Peter’s particular set of skills.

Only one step ahead of their pursuers, Peter and June must race to unravel this peculiar mystery. What they find leads them to an eccentric recluse, a shadowy pseudo-military organization, and an extraordinary tool that may change the modern world forever.

Peter Ash is taking a hike deep into the California redwood forest. He is attacked by a huge grizzly bear and has to climb up a tree to escape it. He had been caught in the rain and Peter decides to continue climbing upwards to catch to sunlight to dry off. The branches he notices have markings on them indicating some type of trail to follow. Then he notices a climbers roe hanging down from above still in good condition. He decides to climb up it and it leads to a netting platform which he eases himself unto. Then he is confronted by a beautiful young lady holding a very high end bow and arrow and it is being pointed at him. She begins shouting orders him and Peter complies with all of them. Her name is June Cassidy a journalist who has a very toned body and is very at home on the branch she is balancing on. Peter tells her he was chased up the tree by a huge grizzly bear. June tells Peter they are extinct. They agree to both climb down the huge redwood tree. They hear voices and suddenly gunfire. Carefully climbing down they both see a group go men and one of the men is standing with one of his legs on the dead bear. June then tells Peter she is hiding from men who say they are government agents who want the formula for the algorithm that can literally can access to the electronic infrastructure of are world. Non stop action and suspense on every page!!! A magnificent read!!! My highest recommendation!!

I hope Peter is able to get his demons under control. The ending leaves a lot of directions he could go.
  • Not real good

The ending makes absolutely no sense. The story up to that point was fair. I will read one more and see if Petrie can rebound.

Very good tension throughout. The turn at end I didn’t understand and didn’t fit with the story, in my view.

While all authors test the boundaries of belief, there is a note of humanity within the stories and characters that rings true. Great stories that grab you and won’t let go until you get to the end! 3 Petrie books in 3 days! It’s official, I’m a Peter Ash junkie!
  • Best read yet!
