Description

A brand new mystery from the world of Lexi Graves featuring a character you've met before...

Shayne Winter thinks she has everything she ever wanted: a job as chief reporter at the LA Chronicle, a swish new apartment in a fabulous neighborhood, and a Californian-cool lifestyle just waiting to reveal itself. But on the first day of her new life, it all goes horribly wrong. The apartment is less ‘young professional’ and more ‘young offender’, the only furnishing a handsome squatter with roving eyes. Even worse, Ben, her predecessor at the Chronicle, has returned to claim his old job, leaving Shayne nothing but the obituary column and a simple choice: take it or leave it.

Her first assignment should be easy: write up the accidental death of washed-up former child-star Chucky Barnard and file her column. Yet when Shayne interviews the people close to Chucky, his sister claims Chucky had everything to live for and his untimely death could only be murder.

Convinced this could be the perfect headline to put her life back on track, Shayne vows to find the truth, convince a reticent homicide detective to investigate, and bring a killer to justice, all before Ben grabs her story and the killer makes Shayne his or her personal deadline.

  • Good Job

This book started out slow, then picked up. What seemed to be a ridiculous premise, turned out to be believable. The good job the protagonist thought she was getting turned into an actual job against all odds. The characters grow on you and you’ll get involved and care about what happens to them.
  • Campy

Good for a quick beach read, but a little too campy and predictable for me.

Unfortunately, the pace of this book didn’t hold my attention. I read about 45 pages before giving up. Also, the constant misuse of words (i.e., using were instead of was) was a distraction.

Camilla Chafer has another hit series on her hands!! Shayne Winters, from the Lexi Graves series, is determined to start a brand new life across the country in L.A. But it's not exactly what she was promised. Not one to give up so easily, Shayne challenges herself to make the best of a bad situation and come out on top! The new cast of characters is funny, witty and diverse. They make a great team. A quick, light read with plenty of laughs and lovable characters. I really liked the first book and can't wait to see what happens next to the Orphan Club!

Camilla Chafer has the start to another great series featuring Shayne Winters. Moving to LA brings new challenges to our favorite reporter friend of Lexi Graves. The dating pool isn't what we expect from LA. The job she is promised gets snatched away leaving her to write an obituary for a former child star. But Shayne soon realizes all is not what it seems, especially for Tinsel Town's newest Ace Reporter. But will she get scooped? And will the obituary that makes the front page be her own?
