What are the most valuable things that everyone should know?

Acclaimed clinical psychologist Jordan B Peterson has influenced the modern understanding of personality, and now he has become one of the world's most popular public thinkers, with his lectures on topics from the Bible to romantic relationships to mythology drawing tens of millions of viewers. In an era of unprecedented change and polarizing politics, his frank and refreshing message about the value of individual responsibility and ancient wisdom has resonated around the world.

In this book, he provides twelve profound and practical principles for how to live a meaningful life, from setting your house in order before criticising others to comparing yourself to who you were yesterday, not someone else today. Happiness is a pointless goal, he shows us. Instead we must search for meaning, not for its own sake, but as a defence against the suffering that is intrinsic to our existence.

Drawing on vivid examples from the author's clinical practice and personal life, cutting-edge psychology and philosophy, and lessons from humanity's oldest myths and stories, 12 Rules for Life offers a deeply rewarding antidote to the chaos in our lives: eternal truths applied to our modern problems.

Really tried to get through it. It has some excellent points and is very well written. However, it seems that it’s more directed towards those who are Christians most of the book has references and based off the Bible and religious figures in Christianity.

Dr. Peterson pours out a lifetime of thinking into a book that will be challenging for most to read, but worth the effort. Bravo, Jordan.

I love this book. It beautifully embodies the message it is trying to convey. It’s existence proves the truth it seeks to uncover and the change it encourages readers to make for the betterment of their own lives.

Peterson has written a book that can serve as a guidebook to supplement any other “life advice” that would come from someone older and close to me. I consider Peterson a great modern day philosopher and writer. I highly recommend this to anyone!

When I first saw this book being mentioned in social media, I was quite skeptical it would be any good. I read the book and I can confirm, this is an excellent book, it talks from things on goal setting - to - raising your children - to - how to handle a negotiation - to - how to have a happy marriage. It is truly an excellent read if you are trying to improve the person you are. But reading the book is 1% of the job, 99% belong in the “treat yourself as if you were someone you were responsible for taking care of”.

I seldom write reviews, only entirely positive or entirely negative. If I never read this book I wouldn’t even have begun to thought about what they could mean for the rest of my life. Many people will receive this book as a gift over the course of my life.

I love the 12 rules and I think Peterson offers sound advice that is well explained in the book. Some of the explanations and get a little wordy so you really need to tune in to get the most from this book. That being said this book is very thought provoking and I would recommend it to anyone philosophically or self-improvement inclined. The book is overall well written and heavily cited to support the rules Peterson puts forth.
  • Powerful.

  • Inspirational not motivational… what do you seek?

This book is not for everyone. Many who are looking for a motivational no nonsense self-help book would do better reading “Unf*#+k Yourself.” It’s also very good, much shorter, and motivates you to action if you’re stuck in a rut. This book is far better however in my opinion. Those who give one or two stars find Peterson rambling and only touching on the point at the end of the chapter. This is of course true. However, that is why I find it among the best, if not the best, self-help book currently available. 12 Rules of Life is not a motivational book. It is inspirational. Each chapter is not designed to explain the “rule” he posits in each chapter. Instead he talks around his thesis and lets you reach the conclusion on its own. It is done well, thematically, and with no shortage of insight. You will not relate to everything he says, but you will often find enough relatable to find a personal resonance to the message. Motivational self-help books are effective because you believe the author. Inspirational self-help books are effective because you believe yourself once you make the essential connection to the theme. This distinction cannot be understated. If you are one that tends to fall back into self-destructive habits, even after making massive successful changes to your life short-term - this book may be worth the read.

We choose this book for our book club. It is a difficult read. Lot of rambling before reaching the point of the end of the chapter.
