Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the acclaimed author of The Weight of Water and The Pilot's Wife: an exquisitely suspenseful novel about an extraordinary young woman tested by a catastrophic event—based on the true story of the largest fire in Maine's history.
“Long before Liane Moriarty was spinning her 'Big Little Lies,' Shreve was spicing up domestic doings in beachfront settings with terrible husbands and third-act twists. She still is, as effectively as ever.” —New York Times Book Review
In October 1947, Grace Holland is experiencing two simultaneous droughts. An unseasonably hot, dry summer has turned the state of Maine into a tinderbox, and Grace and her husband, Gene, have fallen out of love and barely speak. Five months pregnant and caring for two toddlers, Grace has resigned herself to a life of loneliness and domestic chores. One night she awakes to find that wildfires are racing down the coast, closer and closer to her house. Forced to pull her children into the ocean to escape the flames, Grace watches helplessly as everything she knows burns to the ground. By morning, her life is forever changed: she is homeless, penniless, awaiting news of her husband's fate, and left to face an uncertain future in a town that no longer exists. With courage and stoicism, Grace overcomes devastating loss and, through the smoke, is able to glimpse the opportunity to rewrite her own story.

Great read
5By YayalovesGodInteresting characters and story lineStory of courage and love
5By The Pilot's DaughterI was immersed by the end of the first page. Ms Shreve’s characters are vibrant, her heroine nothing short of selfless and of great courage. A harrowing story line, I felt Grace’s fear, I admired this person so true to life, so determined to provide for and protect her children. I cheered her life changing decision, the end left me wanting to know more about her life.Beautiful
5By TatchiiiI honestly wasn’t sure about this book in the beginning, but I was slowly captivated by the characters and the plot.. the twists and turns.. wow.. so sad it’s overEmotional journey
5By lbsterI really enjoyed the heart wrenching, uplifting, and difficult book. The bad marriage and the historical fire with an incredibly strong woman weaving her way through it all to find magic in her future. Beautiful storyMet all of my expectations
5By E&G's mommyI have loved Anita Shreve’s books forever, especially the Fortune’s Rocks series. This one is in much the same vein, and I enjoyed it equally.Fabulous!
5By A weird sisterHaving lived the majority of my life in southern coastal Maine. I heard many people’s tales of this horrific tale. I absolutely loved this story. Definitely first class and a terrific read. I will recommend this book, I throughly enjoyed it and wish it hadn’t ended.Really a 3.5
3By asapr212This is a good story and I very much liked the female characters, but the last 75 pages are too long without, ironically, enough information. I found myself turning to the end to find out what happens, then backing up to relevant passages. Shreve's ability to create story is unsurpassed- this was just not as tight as some of her other books.Love!
