5By Arnold AguilaWhen I found out that the anime’s source material was based off a light novel I had to read it. I extremely glad to say that it’s totally worth my money. I find myself losing track of countless hours just for the sheer enjoyment of what’s going to happen next. The anime that I loved does not do this light Novel justice. There are more backstories and subplots that make it seem like a whole new adventure.One of the best “isekai” stories I’ve experienced
4By dinobootyI first found out about Overlord through the anime, intrigued by the skeleton protagonist, and stayed because of the many wonderfully wicked characters. Naturally, I have to read the light novel. Maruyama-san clearly knows his MMO lingo and he clearly has some knowledge on what makes an MMORPG run successfully (until it shuts down its servers, that is) in the real world. The detailed tangents on what the game Yggdrasil was like are amazing; I’m astounded how far he has thought of the game’s mechanics up to what breaks it. I also love how deeply he allows us to delve into Momonga/Ainz’s thoughts, his rationale as a person ‘spirited away’ to a world he doesn’t know, as well as his hangups towards his guildmates that quit before him. That, I think, is missing a bit in the anime. I actually only wanted to reduce half a star, but I’m unable to, so I have to settle on 4 stars. My criticism is that dialogues tend to get confusing, as dialogue tags are missing from where they need to be. Often I have problems identifying who is speaking, especially when there’s more than 3 characters in a scene. I don’t think it’s a translation issue. Overall, if you’re looking for a light read and a fresh take on fantasy and ‘isekai’ genres, I highly recommend this light novel.The author started this series strong!
5By Ehh!!*But Fun!!*The book way of structure was very well put together. The characters was given enough thought to bring out their best qualities or personality. I’ve watched the anime and read some of the manga of this series. However, none of them couldn’t match the artistic description of light novel. It is well written that I will buy all of the next volumes so that I can enjoy such a masterpiece!Worth the read
