A Courtship of Convenience
Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run of the mill London merchant. He's grim and silent. A man of little emotion—or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she's ready to put an end to things.
A Last Chance for Love
But severing ties with her taciturn suitor isn't as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there's Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What's a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to Appersett House for Christmas and give him one more chance to win her? Only this time there'll be no false formality. This time they'll get to know each other for who they really are.
Reviews
Good book. Like historical facts.
5By MelbladeIt’s good read. Interesting parts of history included.Victorian historical romance
3By jdt_sThis was a bit interesting in that it discussed in brief the scientific and technological advances in the late 1800s that were being instilled in the ancient houses of the Country Gentry. Also the beginnings of the changes in class barriers as impoverished daughters married the wealthy new industrialists and tradesmen thus blending class distinctions. Slightly more interesting than the usual romantic trifle!A Holiday by Gaslight
4By PalatableDinnerThis was a nice, well-written and cute novella. It is worth noting that images weren’t formatted for iBook’s dark mode. While the period is well-researched, the author misconstrues Darwinism, conflating behavioral adaptation with natural selection. It especially hurts since it’s used in an attempt to demonstrate Sophie’s intellect and progressivism. This aside, it made for an overall immersive read.A Holiday By Gaslight

5By lfdykesThis is a new author to me and when I saw the beautiful cover and title, I just had to read it! Set in Victorian England, we find our heroine, Sophie, knowing that she needs to marry for money. You see her father overspent trying to keep up with the times by putting in gas lines and running water in their home. I mean wouldn't you have done the same with these inventions to make life easier? Sophie began a courtship with a tradesman, Ned Sharpe. But after a couple of months, it seemed they truly were not comparable But at Christmas, even something magical might happen to bring these two together. I really enjoyed the details and historical descriptions brought forth in this novella and hope to read more by this author in the future! I read this through NetGallery Read less
