Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Rise of Kyoshi (Chronicles of the Avatar Book 1)
By F.C. Yee & Michael Dante DiMartino
- Release Date: 2019-07-16
- Genre: Fantasy for Young Adults
Description
An instant USA Today and New York Times bestseller, F.C. Yee’s Avatar, the Last Airbender: The Rise of Kyoshi delves into the story of Kyoshi, the Earth Kingdom–born Avatar.
Written in consultation with Michael Dante DiMartino, the visionary cocreator and executive producer of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra animated TV series.
The longest-living Avatar in this beloved world’s history, Avatar Kyoshi established the brave and respected Kyoshi Warriors, but she also founded the secretive Dai Li, which led to the corruption, decline, and fall of her own nation.
The first of two novels based on Avatar Kyoshi in the Chronicles of the Avatar series, The Rise of Kyoshi maps her journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice who is still feared and admired centuries after she became the Avatar.
“Yee artfully weaves in political entanglements as well as complex cultural identities to fully immerse readers in Kyoshi's world. . . . An action-packed tale that answers some long-awaited questions; fans will look forward to the promised sequel.”—Kirkus Reviews

2By jk1212i know the avatar franchise is a gold mine and many appreciate anything they churn out, but so far nothing has come close to TLA for me, and this is no different. It’s poorly written, drags on without much substance. You’re never hanging off every word, you’re wondering is something going to happen in the next 20 pages? An Avatar for adults
5By Ka Lyn NaSeriously amazing story. I'm 30, and was recently introduced to the Avatar world. I've become obsessed. AtLA is charming, LOK has depth, and The Rise of Kyoshi is dark. It's very much an adult story, and it's so well-written. I may have a new favorite Avatar... A live-action, or even animated adult series is all I want from this now.A thrilling, fresh take on another Avatar origin
5By hey.erikoI’m a huge ATLA fan and was hungry for more story after rewatching the series along with Korra. This novel was exactly what I needed. The author does an amazing job at seamlessly growing the ATLA universe as we know it, building on the rich mythologies we’ve learned to love. The pacing was great and characters were all very well-developed. The thrilling action sequences were balanced perfectly with the heartfelt moments of romance and humor (just like the series). I can’t wait to jump into the sequel and hope for more novels that feature other avatars!Beautiful!
5By sasukedoesntsayswearsThe more I learn about Kyoshi the better she gets!! Amazing pacing of the story and amazing writing, plot lines, villain, goals, and backstories! I absolutely loved this masterpiece (and I love rangi) 10/10 would recommendFinished then immediately purchased the 2nd book

5By Casterwill_This is such a beautifully crafted story. We get to see Kyoshi in a light unlike anything before. If you want to learn more about the the world that captivated you as you watched the animated series, this book will not disappoint.Incredible, emotional, deeply character driven
5By ~DragonQueen~This book brought me through twists and turns, surprises I couldn’t even begin to expect! And with an authentic, intriguing writing of Kyoshi, my personal favorite character from the Avatar series. The story is brilliantly written and fearless, bringing you on such a wild, emotional journey through Kyoshi’s hardships in becoming the Avatar we know her to be. I could not recommend this book ENOUGH!!!Better than how I imagined her story
5By TopnamanThe story was a nail biter and it actually got me to read which is a very difficult task. Hats off to Yee. And story telling and detailing is so well done that you could already imagine the animation version in your head.Absolutely excellent!!!
5By Jackhill89I am 31 years old. I’ve watched Avatar TLA since the very beginning. I’ve always had a love for it. The characters, their growth, and their tribulations. I have never finished a book a day in my life. All that being said I absolutely could not put this down. Everything about it was amazing. I was afraid for how they would depict the bending and the fights and one of the fights in this book will go down as one of my favorite fights in the series, AND THERES NOT EVEN BENDING IN IT. If you are a true fan os the series this is one hundred percent for you. One of the things that I love about it is how well it’s written for an older audience then the show. (Maybe not for a 31 year old but...) Its great, please read it, the end.Well Done!
5By building fifthAfter getting into Avatar: The Last Airbender and consuming almost all of the current canon, I had to write a review praising F.C. Yee for his work on this novel. The characters had amazing depth, and the Avatar universe in a more adult and consequence-riddled world was refreshing and awesome to say the least. High praise, and anyone thinking about reading should definitely give it a shot!As an OG ATLA fan I approve
5By suhimoSo much detail and thought was put into this book, in the form of cultural analysis of the four nations, mention of familiar places and ancestors of characters from the show. It provides so much insight into the world of Avatar that I have been craving, not to mention bring to life Kyoshi, the character that we only catch glimpses of in the show.
