Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Grand Admiral Thrawn faces the ultimate test of his loyalty to the Empire in this epic Star Wars novel from bestselling author Timothy Zahn.

“If I were to serve the Empire, you would command my allegiance.”

Such was the promise Grand Admiral Thrawn made to Emperor Palpatine at their first meeting. Since then, Thrawn has been one of the Empire’s most effective instruments, pursuing its enemies to the very edges of the known galaxy. But as keen a weapon as Thrawn has become, the Emperor dreams of something far more destructive.

Now, as Thrawn’s TIE defender program is halted in favor of Director Krennic’s secret Death Star project, he realizes that the balance of power in the Empire is measured by more than just military acumen or tactical efficiency. Even the greatest intellect can hardly compete with the power to annihilate entire planets.

As Thrawn works to secure his place in the Imperial hierarchy, his former protégé, Eli Vanto, returns with a dire warning about Thrawn’s homeworld. Thrawn’s mastery of strategy must guide him through an impossible choice: duty to the Chiss Ascendancy, or fealty to the Empire he has sworn to serve. Even if the right choice means committing treason.

Praise for Thrawn: Treason

“Another excellent addition to the new canon . . . Thrawn: Treason will reward you thoroughly for your time.”GeekMom

THIS book is a great book, and it is really self explanitory so you only really need to read the first book to understand it. And it has all the major themes of action, strategy, and even a little romance!

As with all of Timothy Zahn’s books this one does not disappoint. The return of Eli Vanto and Thrawn’s investigation into the shipping disruption for operation Stardust presents an intriguing and interwoven tail that leaves the reader pummeling through chapters towards the conclusion. Thrawn’s ability to conflate art and warfare to beat his allies and opponents shines not only with political infighting amongst the empire but side by side as the mysterious Grysk continue to encroach further into the heart of the Galactic Empire. The welcome inclusion of Admiral Ar’alani and the Chiss Ascendency are welcome additions to a galaxy on the brink of the unknown regions and the possibilities beyond.

Just like Zahn's original Star Wars trilogy, I could not put this book down. Zahn's masterful way of having three or four equally exciting plot lines open and the way he weaves in and out of each of them, leaves you with no time to breathe. He has achieved this with so many of his books and I for one, am thankful and proud that he is getting the recognition that he deserves, for giving us one of the greatest characters that fiction has ever seen, Thrawn. Without taking away any marks for this book, it must be noted however, that the ONLY thing lacking this time round, was the the nail biting, last chapter ending, that he gave us in the original trilogy. Really though, how could he ever have topped that ending (no spoilers here).

Very fun and fast paced read. Lots of space combat, use of actual physics, imperial intrigue, mystery and typical Sherlock Holmes-like problem solving by Thrawn. Many small references to older Thrawn books from the EU that made me smile (remember the Marg Sabl). In summary, loved this trilogy and hope to see more of Thrawn.

While “Thrawn: Alliances” felt like a bit of a letdown after the enjoyable “Thrawn,” this book gets back on the right path: Imperial intrigue, compelling characters, and a display of Thrawn’s tactical brilliance and conflicted loyalties. The biggest issue I had with “Alliances” was that Anakin/Vader and Padme were equal parts boring and insufferable, and it was clear Zahn didn’t understand them well enough as characters to make them compelling. However, the cast of characters he’s assembled in “Treason”—the returning Eli Vanto, Commodore Faro, and Ascendancy Admiral Ar’alani; Project Stardust Assistant Director Ronan; and Imperial Grand Admiral Savit—are vastly more engaging. The connections to Project Stardust, including Director Krennic and Grand Moff Tarkin’s squabbling, and the Rebels cartoon help bridge the book to the overall storyline and give the story a clear place in the Star Wars universe. The plot, while simplistic compared to Zahn’s Legends works, is enjoyable and easy enough to follow. The prose is effective, as well. Oh, and we finally get a real, albeit unsatisfyingly brief, Pellaeon cameo (beyond his name being used in the series final of Rebels). Hopefully there will be opportunities for us to see more of him. “Thrawn” took me a day to read. “Alliances” took me months of stop-and-start reading to get through. “Treason” took less than a week. If you enjoy Timothy Zahn books, and if you’re a fan of Grand Admiral Thrawn, you’ll enjoy this latest entry.
