By J. D. Salinger

Description
The "brilliant, funny, meaningful novel" (The New Yorker) that established J. D. Salinger as a leading voice in American literature--and that has instilled in millions of readers around the world a lifelong love of books. "If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth." The hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caufield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days.
Reviews
A classic… by why.
1By wonderkick11So I’ve heard about this book. Feel like it’s one of those books we’ve all heard of, but nobody except our English teachers have read. So I started it just to see what this famous book is all about. This book was a bore. Holden, our main character, is a complainer, a narcissist, and just a disturbed person. He lacks any depth and is kind of a negative person the whole story. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone. It was slow and the dialogue never really drew me in or was interesting. A flat out waste of time for me. Don’t read it, google what it’s about and you will be better off.Awful
1By mr. very sad boyHolden (the main character) is the most annoying person ever. I had to read this for a school project and I hated every minute of it.What’s the big deal?
2By TxAggie911It’s a big book of complaints and nothing really happens. I am not really sure how to share without spoilers but I don’t get how this book was so influential, really I don’t.Seriously?
1By A_W_12This is considered a work of art? I would like my time and money back.Ok
3By deeptoot4444Although the writing is unique and quite brilliant, I found myself utterly depressed and often repulsed. So apparently Salinger is genius because I’m sure that was the intent. Not My Favorite…I don’t get it I guess
3By josh kriiiiiiHolden would be annoying to deal with in real life.Best book
5By thankyou333I’ve read it twice and would probably read againOverrated
1By JHG195I can not believe the amount of five star reviews of this garbage! With Holden Caulfield’s obnoxious nature, the bland setting, the horrible messages, and the lack of fire breathing turkeys, there is no time when it will be EVER worth reading this garbage! Besides, Johnathan Yardley and Phillip Lopate already exposed this as garbage. Great American novel my butt!Don't read it. Please
1By MEEPOlovar100@&$)I am VERY into classics and read this because it was supposed to be one. The main character is SO. ANNOYING. Every SINGLE PAGE has either the words madman or goddamn. The main character hates everything and everyone and complains about everything constantly. I honestly feel like this is the worst book I have ever read. Would rate 0 stars if i could. My favorite book
5By SeverusSnape007I first read this three years ago when I was twelve. This book gave me the voice I didn’t think I had as I found myself within its pages. Since then, I have read this book around five times. I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a book (especially if you find yourself caught in a struggle with the hardships of life).Loved it
5By Miracle GuyRead for a college writing course, honestly the first book I read every word of instead of skipping around like I did in high school. If you didn’t get “it” you didn’t put much effort into it. Maybe Dr. Seuss is better to stick to. It made me appreciate reading much more and 30 years later I’m reading it again. Maybe I’ll hate it this time. Sam I am.. I love green eggs and ham…Hellish
1By 1040ESThis is by FAR the worst book I have ever read! It reads like an episode of Seinfeld except there is no humor whatsoever and the main character is completely insufferable. Do not read unless you are being forced to at gunpoint. It was okay
3By Giles M.I liked hearing a different perspective on how a person may think but I felt like nothing big happened throughout the whole book. How is this book so revered?
3By JhgdshferI don’t get the appeal of this book. I hate the main character, he repeatedly says “he hates” this or is “depressed by” that. If you cut that dialogue out this book would be 30 pages shorter. It’s actually really annoying. I had to force myself to finish this book and I’m not happy I did.I've no idea what the hype is
1By T-Bone$$this book is hailed by many as a timeless classic, so I began reading excited to see what the hype was all about. by chapter 10 it was a pain to continue. Holden is just a whiney brat with awful opinions on the world presented in the just judgemental way. it's extremely difficult listening to people that judgemental. my only takeaway from this book is stay away from anyone who would rate this more than 3 stars.Favorite book of all time
5By hinata1187I recently re-read this. We read it in school but it never really stuck with me. Honestly the whole time I was reading I kept waiting for something major to happen or a plot twist. It never did. It seemed to just be the normal day to day of a teen. Full disclosure I have bi polar disorder and other mental illness. And when the realization came at the end and the sudden rush came over me at once I cried til I couldn’t breathe. No book has ever related to me so perfectly and no other ever could. If you start to feel like the book isn’t really going anywhere just keep going, I promise you will see. Especially if you suffer from mental illness. 20/10 would recommend! Not my favorite
3By hache432009The story line was good but the words didn’t really flow for me. Holden swears kinda excessively which kind of made it less enjoyable.Love this book
5By kayla🥲Til death do us part. I read this book a million times and I’m still not bored with it. It resonates with me, I understand the main character. For those who have never faced or seen this hardship of depression and grieving will consider the protagonist annoying but he is simply misunderstood. I say give it a go.KILL JOHN LENNON
