“[An] irresistible placement of a complicated family in a bewitching place.” The New York Times

A story of summer, secrets, love, and lies: in the course of a singular day on Cape Cod, one woman must make a life-changing decision that has been brewing for decades.

“This house, this place, knows all my secrets.”

It is a perfect August morning, and Elle, a fifty-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at “The Paper Palace”—the family summer place which she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: last night Elle and her oldest friend Jonas crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, over the next twenty-four hours, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband, Peter, and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love, Jonas, if a tragic event hadn’t forever changed the course of their lives. As Heller colors in the experiences that have led Elle to this day, we arrive at her ultimate decision with all its complexity. Tender yet devastating, The Paper Palace considers the tensions between desire and dignity, the legacies of abuse, and the crimes and misdemeanors of families.

This is a solid read. It’s a strong 4/5. The suspense of how the story unfolds held my attention from the very beginning.

This book started off a bit slow the first 40 pages and then it started to get into a great story. The writing is excellent, flows easy and the story moves quickly. This was a great read!
  • A mess of thoughts.

I found this book very hard to keep up with. It felt like a rambling diary following her train of thought. The paper palace is supposed to be this place she ties to her childhood but every memory flashback is a negative memory. There is hardly any positivity. I also found myself on the opposite end of most readers with Peter. “Genuinely beloved” would not be the way I describe a character who gaslights his wife into things she doesn’t want to do & then blame her when the outcome doesn’t go well. And laughing at the disrespect she receives from her children and mother? Made me hate his character. All together this was a boring read with no real point.

The story of a family cottage and it’s pull on the protagonist. It’s a story of finding first a love connection in that special place, then moving on to build a family with someone else. The inevitable return to the magical place and reunion with that first love that was never really lost.
