Description

A ROYAL FARCE is the hilarious first book in the Retail to Riches series, which follows a plucky big box store employee on her journey from fighting to pay the bills to discovering she’s married royalty. Fans of Superstore will love this charming story.

"Heffernan has a way with the back-and-forth banter that I love to read between characters...This really was a sweet, funny, five-star experience!" - Sara, Chick Lit Central

Lila needs to pay her soul-crushing debt. Pierre needs a wife. Maybe they can help each other.

Once she finishes these renovations, Lila can finally sell the money pit she’d been living in and get back on her feet. But on box store wages, that'll take decades. Then her friend Pierre proposes the perfect solution.

Pierre needs a green card. If Lila marries him, he’ll pay to create her dream home. Win-win, right? One problem: who is going to believe the gorgeous, brilliant investment banker fell for plain little Lila? Everyone, if the two of them have any say in it.

Not even their closest friends or family can suspect the truth. Lila fakes the walk of shame, feigns total surprise at Pierre's staged public proposal, and plans their wedding with a single-minded determination rivaled only by her pet Yorkie begging for treats.

Their staged relationship is so perfect, Lila starts to believe it’s real. Then Pierre’s brother drops a bombshell: they are royalty, princes of a tiny island nation, and Lila is decidedly not princess material.

Now, instead of studs and sandpaper, Lila finds herself worrying about titles and tiaras. Will Lila get her happily ever after, or will her prince decide she's not so charming after all?

"Wonderful banter and I loved all the quirky characters." - Comfy Chair Books

"Heffernan has a way with the back-and-forth banter that I love to read between characters, and what I really like is when the protagonist discovers new things about themselves that really creates the character evolution I hold so dear to my heart." - The Book Bag

"If you enjoy the hugely popular royal romance genre then you will enjoy this :) ...Laura is a 'new to me' author and I really enjoyed her writing style." - Jo, Reading is My Bliss

A Royal Farce will appeal to fans of: Melanie Summers, Becky Monson, Tracie Banister, Whitney Dineen, and Teri Wilson.

Reviews

  • Interesting Concept, but a bit cheesy for my tastes

Loved the idea of the story and the build to what the main conflicts would be, but certain moments kind of fell flat and there wasn’t the right build of emotion for some of the lines spoken. Still enjoyed reading and finishing though
  • Got Political

Not in a good way. I couldn’t even finish after the author stated AOC was so intelligent and wanted the character to be like her.
  • Left leaning

The overall Love story was is the reason the read the book. The characters had their funny moments and the story line while not believable is a fun quick read. The politics and lgbt drops were used it seemed to check a box. They did not progress the story or had to relevance.
  • Started off well

The story totally flopped in the end. I wanted the time I spent on it be returned. It’s like the author just gave up.
  • Too political for a beach read.

Good story telling and dialogue, author lost me when she started with politics. Romantic comedies are a vacation for the mind one chapter at a time, not where one goes for political discussions or musings. There is more than enough in reality.
  • Funny beach read with substance

There are a ton of funny “chic lit” romances out there, especially those based on the “girl falls in love with royalty, but has no idea he’s royal” trope. I read this literally on a beach on vacation and just thought it’d be a fun, frothy beach read. I was pleasantly surprised to find it more than that. The heroine was smart and issue-oriented (without the book being preachy). The author managed to get her to have a romance without sacrificing who she is. In fact, she was able to find out more about herself through her relationship. Very satisfying beach read that’s definitely a cut above the others in the genre.

Sweet story with some fun little twists. Perfect for a beach read or a little weekend escape from the real world, while cozy on your own sofa. I look forward to more of this series—I’m sure they’ll be as fun as the author’s other books!
