Description

“Wildly entertaining.”—New York Times Book Review

From the bestselling and award-winning author comes a wickedly clever and fast-paced novel of greed, revenge, obsession—and quite possibly the perfect murder.

Simon and Vicky couldn’t seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing’s for sure: absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer.

When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due. A decades-long grudge and obsession with revenge. These are just a few of the lies that make up the complex web... and they will have devastating consequences. And while both Vicky and Simon are liars, just who exactly is conning who? Part Gone Girl and part Strangers on a Train, Look Closer is a wild rollercoaster of a read that will have you questioning everything you think you know.

This was the book my book club chose to read for March-April. I throughly enjoyed it! I titled this ‘Patience’ because I think it took a while to really pick up for me, but once it did it was SO good. The style of writing with the the multiple points of views was different for me, but I liked it. I actually think it’s essential to the way the story is told.

An amazingly complex plot so well written that I want to read it again to see all the nuances and clues that I missed on the first read.

I used to love reading as a child. Growing up in an internet world, I slowly got away from it. This is the first complete book I have read in well over 10 years. I finished it in 5 days! This book had so many twists and turns it was hard for me to put it down. My reading spark has been lit once again.

This is my first book by David Ellis and I really enjoyed it. It has a lot of twists and kept me wondering how it would end. I almost gave it 4 stars because I didn’t love the end, but it’s one of few few books that I’ve read that I didn’t get bored reading a drawn out ending.

It’s certainly a page turner, but if you go back and read the previous chapters after the big reveal, you realize that the reason it’s a surprise is that the previous 1st person narratives were lying to you. So it’s not actually clever writing, it’s misdirection by the author, followed by a sort of “made you look” ending that ultimately makes you want your money back.

Outstanding book that I greatly enjoyed reading!! Wow - I would never want to cross Simon! But it’s fun to fantasize about poetic justice taking care of evil people! Loved the ending! Finished in one day because I couldn’t wait to know how all the puzzle pieces fit together. Lots of surprises!

I thought I was going to need a scorecard to keep track of all the twists and turns in this book! This was my first David Ellis book and I enjoyed it - it was a wild ride. The beginning of the book didn’t grab me, but once the twists started coming, it was hard to put down and I finished it in two days. Simon and Vicky seem to be a typical Chicago couple. Simon is a law professor and Vicky is a domestic violence victims’ advocate, but appearances can be very deceiving in this “perfect murder” story. When beautiful, young, wealthy Lauren Betancourt is found murdered in her suburban mansion, Simon’s and Vicky’s secrets begin to be revealed. This is a fun summer/beach read that I recommend.
