Description
In Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal–winning classic, twelve-year-old Jonas lives in a seemingly ideal world. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver does he begin to understand the dark secrets behind his fragile community.
Life in the community where Jonas lives is idyllic. Designated birthmothers produce newchildren, who are assigned to appropriate family units. Citizens are assigned their partners and their jobs. No one thinks to ask questions. Everyone obeys. Everyone is the same. Except Jonas.
Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Gradually Jonas learns that power lies in feelings. But when his own power is put to the test—when he must try to save someone he loves—he may not be ready. Is it too soon? Or too late?
Told with deceptive simplicity, this is the provocative story of a boy who experiences something incredible and undertakes something impossible. In the telling it questions every value we have taken for granted and reexamines our most deeply held beliefs.
The Giver has become one of the most influential novels of our time. Don't miss the powerful companion novels in Lois Lowry's Giver Quartet: Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.
Reviews
Giver
5By YayaNetskiThis well written, intriguing story takes place in a dystopian society where human lives are entirely planned out. The plan is for a peaceful well functioning world where everyone knows and accepts their role. The main character is a young man who questions the role he is assigned to. It is an important position where he keeps the history of the world in his very being. It’s an interesting premise and it unfolds from a mystery to an adventure , to a life lesson for all.Easy yet memorable read
4By The real Mac AndersonWell, the giver was a considerably short novel (only about 200 pages) it packed an extremely unforgettable story and the presented themes of knowledge, understanding, wisdom, and the burden of knowing were executed so well, and it was definitely worth my time. If you want a short yet, impactful read, you will find it in this book.Amazing
5By The GainesLois Lowry is my favorite author her books are great read the other three books in the series!!!Well done!
5By CatmeowandiI liked how there was drama, conflict, and sad parts. While I was reading, I felt like I was on a rollercoaster!Flrglblrglsdfkhbfdskjbdfsijbsfvij
3By wingdinggatserIt’s too short 198 pagesAmazing Book, Should be read by everyone.
5By ItsRoo312I absolutely loved this book. It explains the detailed, consistent, same way of life in the community. This book created my own interest into the structure of the life we live today and brought upon personal philosophical curiosities. I believe this story is educational and offers specifically students and readers the positive opportunity to reach outside of what is normal into what is possible, or of the past, or unusual. The Giver is incredibly written and I couldn’t stop reading it. Please read this if you haven’t!Almost made me barf
3By Rockydog23CPOThere are some good and bad parts about this book. If you cry or barf easily:do not recommend!!!!! During the part when Jonas finds out about release I almost barfed and the way the narrator uses his voice makes you cry. (I did cry)Weird
1By Du order nuWeird as my dog walking like a humanHmmmmm….

3By Magnus CatesI did not love this because it ended on a cliff hanger and nothing happened until the last 4 chaptersThis book is soooo goooddd!!!
5By AMD123###YAHOOI’m in the sixth grade and I absolutely love this. I couldn’t put this down until I finished and this author is my favorite! ✨✨Good
5By happypurpleunicorn2Was forced to read this book for English class and fell in love with it.Awful
2By Pilkey is the bestI hate this book. Because you actually wrote something about Jonas’ father KILLING A #$&@*&$ BABY!!!! I’m officially done giving a crap!😡 That book shouldn’t have been published in the first place. Why don’t you write a romance novel or something I recommend Walk Two Moons to you guys who read this inappropriate book. In the graphic novel, there is Nudity, Suicide, and Disregard to people who are different. You deserve 1-star. HOWEVER, that one part about WHERES MY SMACK” wasn’t so bad.I hated this book
1By FantasyFanacticThis book is very confusing. Jonas is a bad protagonist, he doesn’t realize that he is literally alone, his friend don’t understand pain and he forgets that…a lot. The giver is annoying being all mysterious. He’s just an off brand, on crack Dumbledore. Honestly, my favorite character was Gabriel(A baby, who talks gibberish throughout the novel) or Asher, Jonas’s best friend who is a minor character. One of the best books
5By 10987543890753259This is a super good book I am reading all of the other giver books and I read count the stars anyways this is such a good book thanks.Cool.
4By Corporal ZilIt’s good and all when Jonas fell of the sled 🛷 the descriptions were kind of gory. Also did he really have to throw up 🤮 when he fell of? That seems like a weird thing to happen. The book it’s self is very interesting and makes us question about the future. But just one more thing…. THEY KILL BABIES!!! It’s true!!! The society loves to be equal and if are born they choose the one that weighs less and do what they called being released a.k.a kill people cause they don’t follow the rules aren’t equal or are old. The ending is very good too but is very vague. That is my book review. Even if there are a few problem is it’s still a good book. BTW if you are a very sensitive person who get sad a lot Don’t read this book read something happierAwesome
