Description

“There are monsters among us. There always have been and there always will be. I’ve known that ever since I can remember, just like I’ve always known I was one…
…Well, half of one, anyway.”

Welcome to the Big Apple. There’s a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and a beautiful vampire in a penthouse on the Upper East Side—and that’s only the beginning. Of course, most humans are oblivious to the preternatural nightlife around them, but Cal Leandros is only half-human.

His father’s dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares—and he and his entire otherworldly race are after Cal. Why? Cal hasn’t exactly wanted to stick around long enough to find out.

He and his half-brother Niko have managed to stay a step ahead for three years, but now Cal’s dad has found them again. And Cal is about to learn why they want him, why they’ve always wanted him…for he is the key to unleashing their hell on earth. The fate of the human world will be decided in the fight of Cal’s life…

Nightlife reads nothing life a first novel. Stuffed with lyrically descriptive language and unexpected analogies, Rob Thurman shows herself to be an imaginative and competent writer who outpaces peers that have been in the field for decades. Her ability to give unique voice to her first person character, and then to change that voice in the most subtle, yet profound ways, show a distinct understanding of human psychology that is often lacking in many of today's novels. The story is unique and yet ageless; a struggle against nature, against good and evil, against self. The lows and lowers of conflict wrench at the heart, making that final resolution, that moment that is not a high, but is simply a hope for the return to life, feel all the sweeter. To my friend who first read this book when it was released back in 2006, who has tirelessly wage the gentle battle that I share her joy in this book, I offer my sincere apologies. I was wrong to have waited so long and your passion has now been sparked in me. To Rob Thurman, I cannot wait to read the rest of your works. If this is the first of your offerings, I cannot even imagine the joy I will find in what comes next as your skill in story telling continues to grow. Bravo. *Originally posted on goodreads

I have this a 3 star review because, while it wasn't a bad book, it just wasn't great, either. The quips got annoying. But I liked how the narrator stayed the narrator while possessed. That was a neat thing. And the whole idea was fun. Just not that engrossing a lot if the time.

I should have read the other comments before buying this book. I've read other books by Thurman and have enjoyed them. That's why I bought this book; however, this book is not by Thurman. Although the cover is the book I wanted, the contents are by Elizabeth Guest--the book seems to be a rather horrid romance. I hope Apple will correct this problem and refund my money.
