In Son of a Witch, Gregory Maguire suggests that the magic we locate in distant, improbable places like Oz is no greater than the magic inherent in any hard life lived fully, son of a witch or no.

3By macmecI loved Wicked. But Son of a Witch didn't seem to have a point the way Wicked did for me. I felt emotion for Elphaba. But Liir was just not a character that I enjoyed. I felt, like Liir did, that little of anything in his adult life meant much of anything.Loved It!!!
