Description

The prequel story to the award-winning and bestselling video game franchise. How the majesty of Rapture, the shining city below the sea, became an instant dystopia

It's the end of World War II. FDR's New Deal has redefined American politics. Taxes are at an all-time high. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has brought a fear of total annihilation. The rise of secret government agencies and sanctions on business has many watching their backs. America's sense of freedom is diminishing…and many are desperate to take that freedom back.

Among them is a great dreamer, an immigrant who pulled himself from the depths of poverty to become one of the wealthiest and admired men in the world. That man is Andrew Ryan, and he believed that great men and women deserve better. And so he set out to create the impossible, a utopia free from government, censorship, and moral restrictions on science—where what you give is what you get. He created Rapture—the shining city below the sea.

But as we all know, this utopia suffered a great tragedy. This is the story of how it all came to be…and how it all ended.

Years later after playing the video game, finding this book and reading it made Rapture come to life! Hearing the echos of the splicers, imagining the leaks in the city, the moans of a Bid Daddy or the voices of the little sisters. I can’t wait to revisit Rapture in game again! Just a good read!!

Orwell was my favorite in high school. Rapture seriously channels the same style except scarier and dare I say, even more imaginative. This is my new favorite book!

This would be a great book on it’s own. But if you know what the Rapture is - you’d just love it. Reminds me of Jules Verne, Herbert G. Wells and... Ayn Rand! Thank you John Shirley - i did not waste my time reading it!:)

Not only is this a great companion novel for BioShock fans, it is simply a great novel. It made me want to replay the games to see how it all ties in. Great attention to detail. I've read it twice through since it was first released.

This book really added to the games. The book really filled in details (yes I know he made them up) about characters that actually made sense. I hope he writes more. This game and book have really surprised me and hopefully a new game will come out diving into what happen after lamb blew most of it up... Maybe someone will rebuild Rapture. Make it the city it should have truly been. Perfected ADAM and EVE along with a splicer army. This book is a must read to anyone who has played the games. Blew me out of the water :P

I have heard a bunch of weird theories about some things in bioshock and this explains everything including the location of rapture right on the cover.

An unreal world under the sea. Such a crazy story that it provoked me to buy the game bioshock and actually live the story. I recommend that you do the same, read it and play it..

If you were as captivated by the 2 Bioshock games as I was, this is the book for you. Well written and fast paced, this book lays out the conception of Rapture, its construction, and the many tragic figures involved. It's a violent, sad tale as you watch a mind altering substance destroy a society, while all along a mad struggle for money and power ensues. The story takes you all of the way to the point where a plane crashes, and a lone survivor named Jack makes his way to a lighthouse... Enjoy!
